So that's why Mother always taxed our Easter baskets by eating the ears of the bunnies the Easter Rabbit brought her five daughters. Now I understand it!

Paul (jenksy) | 2 comments Hello there..

I'm Paul, a Yorkshireman living in london.
I absolutely love reading and have since I can remember..Generally my reading is done on the tube to and fro work. A couple of years ago I succumbed to buying a kindle after a few years of being vehemently against them...well I'm glad I did, although missing the smell of books I have found my Kindle most excellent.
Currently I'm reading Shogun.
I have a varied taste in books ranging from History to Murakami to Easton Ellis to Welsh to Ellroy to Rynd. Anything that tickles my fancy I will read.

Anita | 3313 comments You will fit in very well Meow.

Welcome Paul, quite a few of us Yorkshire folk in the group so you will feel right at home.

Phew - what a relief hopefully next year it'll be giant sized eggs that are calorie-free, she said in hope.

What I adore about Goodreads is remembering a book I loved but had forgotten all about! Am going to download Shogun right now and re-read.

Thanks for the reminder, Paul.

Jane Jago Has anybody ever posted a thread asking which books people like so much that they own them in both paper and Kindle versions?

Is it a common thing to do? Or is it just eejits like me :-)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Welcome, Paul! I married into Yorkshire.

message 970: by Amber (new)

Amber Hi, I'm Amber and I hail from Bournemouth (well, actually I originally hail from Nottingham via Llanelli, but that's another story). I work as a lecturer and I'm pretending to write a PhD, so you'd be forgiven for thinking I would have no time for reading.

Well it seems I do. Anything from dog eared old memoirs to the latest hyped novel, and everything in between. I am proud to say I was an early adopter of the Kindle and have one of the original keyboard models. The letters have long since worn away. No, I'm not replacing it any time soon with one of those fancy paperwhite numbers.

Anyway, hi. I'm settling down with a cuppa and a trawl through this group. I may, or may not, pop up again soon.

Amber Oh and one question that has been bugging me forever ...

Why is it I can devour fiction at top speed on my Kindle, but really struggle with reading non-fiction? Anyone else find that?

message 972: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21819 comments Amber wrote: "Oh and one question that has been bugging me forever ...

I've seen work done which suggests that when reading an electronic document you do tend to 'skim' more than when reading paper.
With fiction this isn't going to be an issue because many people do tend to almost skim fiction anyway, but with non-fiction you'll struggle to cope

Amber Jim wrote: "Amber wrote: "Oh and one question that has been bugging me forever ...

Hmm. Yes I recognise the 'skim' part :)

message 974: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hi Amber. I actually don't skim, even on an electronic device. If I find I have, I go back.

message 975: by L.A. (new)

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Yep, me too, even if it means re-reading a boring bit!.

message 976: by Amber (new)

Amber Maybe I should cultivate a little more patience then. I do always kick myself when I rush a good book, but when it is a real page-turner I can't help getting swept along.

I shall endeavour to slow down a wee bit.

message 977: by L.A. (new)

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments I guess it depends what you're reading. I've just re-read all the John Sandford Davenport books and they're serious page turners and very hard to put down. Then I moved on to PD James, and they're really quite different - much slower even though the stories are pretty good. All in all I prefer the page turners!!

I spent three wonderful years in Uganda. It's a beautiful country.

I can't find the book you need on the Goodreads database. Can you give more details? Who is the publisher?
Could you contact the author(s) directly?

RukiaNotKuchiki | 3 comments Hi All, I'm Rukia and live in London. I'm a reader mainly of fantasy fiction (and part time writer of YA fantasy fiction), and have just started up on GoodReads. So much is going on here that I'm still trying to orientate myself and figure out the rules :-) If anyone is interested in making new friends on goodreads, please let me know or add me! I'm looking forward to talking about all things bookish and about your writing, if you're a writer.

Also, was anyone at the London Book Fair this year? It was my first and I absolutely loved it. Missed a few seminars I wanted to go to, especially the Amazon Kindle ones featuring Indie authors at Author HQ, so if anyone went and wants to catch up about those, please get in touch :-)

Best, Rukia

Dougie McHale | 7 comments Hi, I've just come across your group and really liked what I saw. I've been a member of Goodreads for sometime now but never really invested a lot of time in it until now. I'm an author and I read books
that invest in interesting and strong characters, of course the plots important but I love to get to know the characters. Anyway I'm glad to be here. Dougie.
