Hi Gingerlilly. Thanks for the welcome. Yeah weather hasn't been great to get out for photos. Nice to meet you.

Hi Anita for Sheffield. Great to see so much interest in photography here. I fell into landscape/seascape as when I bought my first DSLR nearly three years ago and joined a local camera group, they were nearly all into those styles so I followed suit and learnt as much as I could from them.

Not sure yet how to put images up on here but here's a link to my Flickr account if you are interested: www.flickr.com/adox66

We have some very good crime, & thriller writers in this group and I hope you find some to suit yourself.

Anita | 3313 comments Wow is right GL , we may both be a little outclassed I think !

Lovely shots Adrian, what are your favourite filter for landscapes ? I am just thinking about investing and would be interested to know what you would advise. Also do you shoot in RAW ? Sorry you didn't join to have your brains picked about photography.
I hope I you will soon enjoy some of our very own authors work, we have loads of wonderful authors in the group, I think they have just about every genre covered between them.

message 661: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Dooley (adox66) | 32 comments Thanks Anita. Yes I didn't think I'd end up talking photography here but am happy to do so.

Yes I do shoot in raw all the time and manual.

Filter wise I use the Lee filter system. They are very expensive but a good long term investment if you plan on using them a lot. I picked up quite a few of them second hand and splashed out on a few new ones too.
I remember when I first started and saw others using them, I couldn't believe how expensive they were but, having tried cheaper options they are worth the money. The system works great with the filter holder as you can pop them in and out quite quickly. I did initially try a couple of screw on filters but they were just too time consuming and of course you couldn't stack them.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Just caught up with this. Wow! Brilliant photographs, Adrian, I'm extremely impressed, and very envious. I don't have the slightest clue how to turn my mediocre shots into anything anywhere near to something of that quality.

Welcome to the group, by the way :~)

Thanks for that Adrian, I use manual but not been brave enough to tackle RAW yet. I have screw on filters but again not tried the expensive ones yet. In fact I still have the Cokin holder and filters I had with my first SLR, don't think they will fit this camera though. I will check out the filters you suggested, and thank you very much for the advice.

Neil Anderson | 16 comments Kath wrote: "Hi Neil. If we knew that, we'd all be rich! Different things seem to work for different people." Does that mean I shouldn't quit the day job and order my Bentley yet? I'm trying a number of things. I'm not sure that many pople who I don't actually know as read my book yet (although someone I don't know left a great review, which is good). N

message 692: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'd hang fire for a week or two!

Participating in forums like this (other internet forums are available) and just chatting, rather than shoving your wares up people's noses, really does help. Potential readers see you as a person. If they like the cut of your jib, they'll try your book. It's a slow-burner, though. The more you publish, the more people will try something else of yours.

message 693: by Neil (new)

Neil Anderson | 16 comments Cheers, I'm trying to cut the line between promoting the book and without dropping it into too many forums and running, which seems a little rude! A couple of people have told me to wait until I have 4 or 5 books. This one took 20 years, and I'm 51. I don't have that long!

message 694: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Dropping and running will just be a effort on your part that won't reap any rewards, unfortunately.

Kath's got it right. Hang about and post in threads that interest you. It's great fun.

Be sure to open your author thread, too.
The strangest things can happen in an author thread...

As Patti said Alex, just wade in where ever you like. It's difficult to get started but it won't take long once you have posted a few times. We frequently have cotton wool brains round here, you will fit right in !
