Jim | 21819 comments Well I've arranged for Lady wife to get me a couple of books but obviously I don't know what they are ;-)

Anita | 3313 comments Which would you like Jim ?

message 603: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm gonna read the new Stephen King as soon as I get some wifi on my kindle.

Can't wait!

I know what I got because I ordered them :-)
Patricians and Emperors : The Last Rulers of the Western Roman Empire and The Fall of the Seleukid Empire 187-75 BC

message 605: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Hope you enjoy it Patti. The first one looks very interesting Jim. It's not a subject that I know a lot about, you will have to let me know about it when you have finished it.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Geoff's got lots of good things to say about H is for Hawk

There's a non-fiction section where we tend to mention the good ones ;-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments It should be used more.

*stares at Jim*

It was on Geoffs recommendation that I finally bought it Patti, I had looked at it several times till we talked about it last Wednesday.

I never think to look at the non fiction section, I should and maybe even put my recommendations on it. There is never enough time for me !

I didn't think you'd be too interested with
Finds from the Frontier: Material Culture in the 4th-5th Centuries

:-(

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ummm, probably not me personally but I'm sure someone out there shares your taste for dry, boring non-fiction, Jim.

Actually, it makes sense you enjoy that sort of thing so much. Your life amongst sheep is so breathtakingly exciting you'd need to disappear into such just to get your heart rate down.

message 612: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21819 comments Absolutely, and of course there's the minor advantage that when you have a fantasy world to run, it's always useful to know how similar places worked

Seth Kupchick (goodreadscomseth_kupchick) | 1 comments Just introduced myself by inverting a quote from one of my favorite movies, Spinal Tap. "I'm Seth Kupchick from the U.S.A., you must be the U.K.!"

It's good to be here and I hope my Beat vision makes sense. The weather sucks in Seattle too, the land of grunge.

message 614: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hi Seth.

I'm convinced we could do a great re-make of This is Spinal Tap starring some of our groupites.

We'd need to get a few wigs, mind.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Will would be up for that I'm sure :)

message 616: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Hello Seth

message 617: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments We could do The Commitments, too.

You, Anita and Jud as the backing singers.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Oh yeah! But do we all have to sleep with the trumpet player?

Sings "Mustang Sally!"

message 619: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Sorry, sleeping with the trumpet player is mandatory.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Patti (baconater) wrote: "Sorry, sleeping with the trumpet player is mandatory."

Well I'll wait to see who gets that part before I decide if I want to take the backing singer gig.

message 621: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments You won't sleep a wink if he's playing a trumpet! Noisy bloody things!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I'll soon quieten him down...

message 623: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments You could stuff a cracker up his trumpet, that would quieten him down fairly quickly
.
he would have to be young, good looking and rich or I'm out !

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments That cuts out pretty much all our groupites, Anita!

message 625: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments what ! Do you mean there aren't any ? ..... None at all ? ....... Not even a teeny tiny one we can share ? ☹️

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I think if there are they are probably running away as fast as they can....

message 627: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Yes but can they run fast enough ?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I can't run at all at the moment, can you? Although Jud has probably plenty of practise running after Kitty.

message 629: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments only in my dreams ! Good idea, Jud can herd him back this way and we can stick out a foot or two when he's running past

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments That should do it :) But will he be in any state to play the trumpet after that?

message 631: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Our group requires teeny tiny trumpet players.

Inquire within.

Nia Sinjorina (niasinjorina) | 91 comments Hi, just want to introduce myself. My name is Nia, new here, reading since I was old enough to open my eyes, writing since I was old enough to make marks on my Nan's curtains (apparently).

I love anything written with passion, integrity, imagination, and heart. Reading is a journey for me, a journey made with the coin of precious moments; the one thing that sets me alight is an author who can't be bothered to make that journey anything but exceptional. My bugbears are lazy writing, weak plot, two dimensional characters, and a paucity of contextual development.

I am looking forwards to my next journey, in the company of this group.

Hey Carl - not sure if you've ready any Iain M Banks or Peter Hamilton but they write proper scifi: amazing universe, great plots, rich characters, and rollercoaster adventure. My absolute favourites, along with Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash is fantastic!

Enjoy!

Anita | 3313 comments Hello Nia, nice to meet you.

message 638: by Nia (new)

Nia Sinjorina (niasinjorina) | 91 comments Hi Anita 8-)

What a friendly place. If I spend all my time saying hello and discussing books, I'll have no time to read or write ;-)

message 639: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments We are very friendly Nia and enjoy meeting all new members, as for time to read and write, well it's certainly shortened when you in the group, in the nicest way of course. Sure you will soon feel at home.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hi Nia!

Not only does the group eat into reading time, it also lengthens your want to read list!
Couldn't tear me away, though. :)

I've already discovered that to be true. My list has doubled, and unfortunately I enjoy series that now seem to have individual books coming in at over a thousand pages each. It makes my paltry four hundred page efforts seem miserly in comparison.

message 642: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Not at all Nia, a feed book doesn't depend on how many pages it contains, don't pull yourself down !

message 643: by Nia (new)

Nia Sinjorina (niasinjorina) | 91 comments Thanks Anita 8-) I just know how long it takes me to write and edit four hundred pages. A thousand blows me away ... so hurry up, Mr Martin!

Louise Bagshawe | 6 comments Hi I'm Louise Bagshawe aka Louise Mensch, most books out under my maiden name. I read everything, fiction and non-fiction. Currently reading Hesitation Wounds by Amy Koppelman and some Jack Reachers, as well as Shopaholic to the Rescue. I also love non-fiction especially how-tos on writing for kindle. Reading books about dication at the minute.

Currently reading to my three children: Half-Blood Prince, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and The One and Only Ivan.

message 647: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Dooley (adox66) | 32 comments Hi there. I'm Adrian from Dublin in Ireland. Recently turned 49, I always fancied myself as a reader but unfortunately got into a habit of starting books and not finishing them. I think I liked the idea of reading books rather than the practicality of it.
Before Christmas I decided that I wanted to return to reading and use it not only for entertainment and educational purposes, but also as a relaxation tool, something to turn my brain off the constant thoughts and worries of everyday life. I bought myself a Kindle Paperwhite and am slowly picking up some real bargains from Amazon.
In my youth and young adulthood I was a huge Stephen King fan and read all of his books up to maybe 20 years ago. I also like crime novels, thrillers, non fiction. In fact I hope to broaden my horizons in the coming months and enjoy some great works on the kindle.
My wife is an absolute book worm so is slightly amused that I have bought a Kindle and told her I want to "get into" reading!

My main pastime now, and has been for the last three years is photography. I shoot landscape and seascape stuff mostly and love it. Probably the most relaxing of things to do I can think of. I have most of my stuff up on Flickr if anyone is ever interested in having a peak.

I'm also a huge music fan, played the drums in bands for a few years and got an electric guitar for my 40th birthday and tried to teach myself how to play with the help of YouTube.

I look forward to my future reading and involvement here on good reads and will always welcome recommendations on here, whatever the genre.

Thanks so much for reading. I seem to have gone on a bit!!

Cheers.

Adrian.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Hi Adrian - good to see a fellow Dub in here. I love photography as well, although I haven't had much chance to get out and do it recently.

We've several photography enthusiasts in here.

Anita | 3313 comments Hello Adrian from Dublin, I'm Anita from Sheffield and I also love photography although right now I seem to just take photos of dogs and granddaughters. I do enjoy landscape and macro when the time allows. Would love to look at your Flickr site or you could post a couple on the group, photos are right at the bottom. GL took some lovely shots of the supermoon a while back.
