Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4877 comments Hi again, everyone. Alicia here.

I'm probably doing things backward, but I went and dumped my new book information into the fray (you have a 30 days limit - I'm slow).

Thanks all for the warm welcome.

I am a fully grown adult, 41 years married mother of three, and I know how to behave in public. I understand irony and sarcasm and wit (one of the reasons I'm trying this group), but tend to be on the mild side myself (long life managing my tongue).

I will be aware we former colonials (not even Canadian!) are here on suffrage. If it helps at all, my first cousin Linda moved to London umptyfrat years ago and has acquired proper British citizenship, so I am not without kin there (and they tell me my grandmother's family was originally English. Name of Twigg). So, maybe close enough for government work?

The laughing is very welcome.

I've had ME/CFS for 26 years, which made it hard for me to write that novel (15 years it took - and I hope to high heaven completing the trilogy does not take proportionately long). So online, and non-synchronous communication works well for me.

I used to be a physicist at Princeton. Now I write, supervise one chinchilla, and am trying to get the last child (the girl) settled out into the world. Husband finally retired from research science and teaching, so technically life is supposed to be easier. Ha!

Looking forward to listening in and contributing occasionally.

Still not sure I'm not afraid of Goodreads, so please let me know if I step over any lines.

Lines? We have lines now?
welcome aboard Alicia

message 553: by Anita (new)

Anita | 3313 comments Not sure we do any lines, I think Gingerlilly rubbed them out on her last clean up, she was looking for the chocolate fountain at the time so it couldn't be helped ! She did find the fountain though so we forgave her fully.
We have all sorts of pets Alicia, not sure we have had a chinchilla before although I'm sure someone will prove me wrong. There are a lot of us with grown up children and of course wonderful grandchildren, I'm sure you will fit in very well. I will go and take a look at your novel.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4877 comments Thanks, Jim & Anita.

I was pretty sure the stories we new authors hear were about people doing things to push their books (and argue with readers) no person with reasonable sense would do.

But Goodreads is (like Wattpad, where I'm completely comfortable) home to far more readers than writers, and readers should not have to put up with authors who misbehave in obvious ways. Sheesh.

Alicia

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments We're very lucky in our group to count a great many author/readers as valued groupites. (Sorry, I can't refer to people in our group as 'members'. It makes me giggle madly.)

I think they're all so well behaved because Gingerlily's dungeon frightens them.

What a lovely dungeon! [backs slowly away]

Actually, I think I have possibly found one of my spiritual homes. Mad is fine.

I'm a little bit crazy myself - who else would spend 15 years on a book she KNEW she could not sell to an agent?

The intention has always been to get the story out of my head and onto paper, where I can read it as if someone else wrote it when I am 90 and not working so well in the head department. That is still a FEW years into the future, which is fine - there are two more books to complete before the story is finished and you have your hard-won HEA (sort of).

Meanwhile, along came ebooks, and Amazon, and... Fortunately, as a former computational physicist, I fit right in to the demands of formatting an ebook (okay, I cheated - Scrivener did most of the work - but I had to hand-code the right indents. I was NOT about to give up right indents for epigraphs and such).

So there. People keep saying self-publishers don't put in the effort. I beg to disagree - the ones I know take great pride in their work, and hate typos just as much as their readers.

I will stock chocolate. Sounds like a good idea anyway. Especially the virtual kind without calories.

Nik Krasno | 37 comments Gutten morgen,

On top of some other things I do for a living, I write Oligarch series in noir, thriller style for a spending. I don't like oligarchs that much, but I think they do count for interesting characters in high-voltage fiction and allow to reflect on more philosophical issues of enrichment, moral boundaries and so on.

Would be glad to meet readers, fellow authors, oligarchs in British exile and Guy Ritchie for discussing a film option -:)

Have a nice week,

Nik

Jim | 21819 comments I've often fancied being an oligarch Nik, if only to prove that obscene wealth wouldn't spoil me :-)
Welcome aboard

Thanks, Jim.
You still have a chance - not everything is stolen there yet -:) For all I know, fellow authors, like Alex Shaw and George Eccles and probably some more had some interesting experiences in those parts of the Globe, which inspire their writing.
Once you become one though, we, the modest indies, would demand you finance our ad campaigns to prove your virtues -:)

No need, he can probably get by through recruiting a beautiful 180 cm high interpreteur, not because of her beauty, or any such silly things, but solely based on her professional skills -:)

G.W. Eccles (gweccles) | 2 comments Hi, I'm G.W. Eccles and Peach Publishing has just released the second in my Leksin thriller series Corruption of Power

I lived for many years in Moscow and Central Asia travelling extensively throughout Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan - often to places with restricted access to foreigners. During my time there, I advised a number of real-life oligarchs how best to take advantage of the opportunities that became available as regulation crumbled and government became increasingly corrupt. Not surprisingly, therefore, while my novels are fiction, many of the anecdotes and scenes are inspired by actual events.

I now live with my wife - and a cat called Lenin and a bulldog puppy called Boris - in a hilltop village in the South of France.

For more info, visit my website: http://www.gweccles.com

Anita | 3313 comments Nice to meet you too Nik, my daughter and son in law are both called Nikki, he spells his differently, Nicky. It can get quite confusing if people don't know us. The photos are quite old, my eldest granddaughter, in the pink dress has just started school, I also have another granddaughter who will be 2 on January 2nd, what about you ? I know you write, we have loads of great authors for you to meet, what do you like to read ?

message 576: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 37 comments They are all very cute. And yeah I can imagine how confusing it could be having two Nikkis (Nickies) in the family, especially when some Nick or Nik like me comes to visit -:)
I fancy thrillers & action, fantasy and humorous lit fiction. I usually read in Engl/Rus & much less frequently in Heb/Ukr. Sure, I'd love to meet fellow authors, readers and benevolent people in general...

Anita | 3313 comments Well you have lots of choice on here to meet both readers and authors. We are a friendly group and enjoy meeting our new members. Look forward to seeing you around.
