There have been a couple silly romance novels.. i won't own up to them properly.

🌻 August 17th - Discovery Day
~ Read a book that is in a new-to-you genre or written by a new-to-you author.

PLEASE HELP! I need help picking this one. Genres I read quite often: sci-fi, fantasy, historical (fiction and non-fiction), non-fiction (think Malcolm Gladwell, parenting and stuff like "Stiff"), romance, drama (Jodi Picoult, An American Marriage etc.), suspense/thriller (Alafair Burke and Lisa Jewell most recently). I have read a couple memoirs more recently (How to Be an Antiracist, Goodbye, SaraJane: A Foster Child Writes Letters to Her Mother) but it's not a usual genre for me and if it's autobiographical it would be (by default) a new author. Any other suggestions for genres?? What am I consistently missing in my reading diet?

I read Jurassic Park because it was on netflix and piqued my curiosity, but one could also put one of those romance novels here.

I find "new genres" to be a bit difficult at this point, but I have delved into some sub-genres to try to branch out to new things. Do you read anything in the humor genre? I found Louisiana Longshot to be quite funny. It hits the humor and cozy mystery genres, if you haven't tried those out. (It also has seniors as main characters, so I'm not sure if that's a specific genre but it could be. Goodreads does have a list titled "senior citizens.") I know there is a sub-genre for feminist literature that includes books, such as The Handmaid's Tale. That could be new to you too.

I find the "new author" task to be much easier and read many of these each year. I would say that anything autobiographical, if you've not read anything else by that person, would be a new to you author.

I'll take your humor suggestion for sure! My other book club has been on a bit of a feminist literature kick (which has actually been great, at least for me), though I think my husband suffers for it. I was irrationally angry with him for being male after reading The Handmaid's Tale !
