Watching the various Netflix Xmas movies caused me to discover that they are a weird Ouroboros of stories, where characters are watching the other movies but then bizarrely show up in the sequels.

I have The Thing (2011) on right now. Apparently it is a prequel. To the 1982 movie. I guess. I like the creature effects better from 1982. Those were special effects. Not some computer stuff (which is cool and all, but still...) I am only about 40 minutes into it, as you can see it is holding my full attention...I am just gonna say The Thing 1982 is a classic and nothing compares.

The bizarre thing (heh) about the pre/sequel Thing is that they did all of the effects practically, just as in the original, but then replaced them with inferior CGI. Truly a head-scratcher, that.

I do love me some Die Hard. But I also enjoy an annual viewing of Miracle on 34th Street (the non-colorized original, please), It's a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol (1951), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original animated version), and of course Elf. And if they're available: Scrooged and Black Christmas (the unofficial prequel to Halloween).

It's a Wonderful Life was the last movie I saw in a cinema, December of 2019.

It also holds special place for me, not for annual viewings, but because a friend of mine released an album of songs inspired by it, and I give it a listen several times when December rolls around.

I am a huge fan of Die Hard, but there are quite a few non-Christmas Christmas movies. The entirety of Shane Black’s oeuvre, for example, from Lethal Weapon to Iron Man 3. My favorite of his is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Other great holiday-but-not movies:

The Apartment by Billy Wilder. It deserved to sweep the Oscars like it did.

The Thin Man. So great; Nick and Nora Charles are the very definition of “relationship goals”.

Gremlins, Mean Girls, Trading Places, The Ref... especially The Ref for Tassie Dave. It hates Christmas so hard.

and The Nightmare before Christmas was ok.

Does “kiss kiss bang bang” hold up? I remember enjoying it when it came out, but have not seen it since. I’ve thought about it once or twice when I’ve seen it show up on streaming services, but was hesitant, because late 90’s action movies haven’t all aged particularly well.

Believe it or not, I prefer the original black and white movie directed by Howard Hawks (Rio Bravo). It certainly had practical effects back then. I just like how chatty and quip-y all the characters were. It had a large cast. Of course, the monster looks silly these days. This is actually based on a story by infamous Astounding editor John W. Campbell.

They’re both great.

The reason why I think John Carpenter’s The Thing is so great is that it manages to honor both the original short story (Who Goes There?) *and* the first film, which on paper would seem like an impossible task.

And one of my favorite bits was kept from The Thing From Another World when Palmer exclaims, “Supply window!” Which is a funny line from the original — ** glass breaking ** “What was that?!” “Sounds like a window.” 😁 — but they amplified it by making us think one of the initial vectors is a character named Windows.

I did a spoof on the original in college built around that line. “What was that?” “Sounds like a window.” (Door noise) “What was that?” “Sounds like a door.” (Plastic rustling) “What was that?” “Sounds like a bag of Fritos.”

Watching the new season of Virgin River on Netflix with my Mom :). It's just about a female doctor that moves to the mountains after a tragedy in the city. It's based on a book series. A lot of dramatic things certainly happen in the first two episodes of the 2nd season. The Hope character is nuts.

I watched The Holiday Movies That Made Us on Netflix today. There’s just the two, Elf and Nightmare Before Christmas, but both shows are excellent.

All you budding editors out there should watch those shows and ponder the insane amount of work that went into them. Some of the brief visual jokes in the Elf show required crazy investments of time.

So I saw “Stargirl” showed up on HBO max, I watched the first episode earlier today. This is damm good. While it involves a teenager, and originally aired on CW, this did not feel like those shows normally feel. It may go there eventually, but for now, this is a major cut above. And you can see Geoff John’s hands on the story. This pacing and slight miss direction feels like his style.

I read The Starman Omnibus, Vol. 1 a few years ago, but don’t really have much knowledge of where this fits in with that, except the staff has the same look.

It was originally a DC Universe show, but now, going forward it will be a fully CW show. I guess we shall see how the quality holds up once they produce the second season.

Watched Miyazaki's last movie (?) The Wind Rises on Hbo Max. It's a semi-sad movie about a world world ii plane designer. There's an English version.

Also watched Tom Selleck in Jesse Stone: Stone Cold, a police drama. I thought it was good. Maybe I'll read the book. I believe there's a series of these movies, 9 of them made by cbs originally.

He is working on one right now, but is not set to be completed for another 2 or 3 years.
