16. Irving's soliloquy to Harry...what was that about (when he talked about him understanding the kind of cop Harry is)? What statement was he trying to make to him and what provoked him to even have the conversation?

I'm still puzzled by that. Part of me believes that he was trying to explain himself. In his heart, he's jealous of the kind of cop Harry is, respects him. But politically, he can't afford to show him outward support. I think guilt drove that speech.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments I was shocked, surprised and delighted at Irving's little speech. I've always thought that Irving was an honest man underneath all that pompous starch.

I think that he initially believed that Harry was a dirty cop who got away with murder and that is why he went after him at the beginning. However, the more he gets to know Harry, the more he realizes that he is an honest cop and a good person. He now respects him for being the person that Irving himself wishes he could be.

Yes. Looking forward to the next book and Irving's role in discovering Harry's mother.
