Quarantine Tuesday Reading Kaffeeklatsch 7/14/2020 (edit)

I think Cuomo is setting the stage for a presidential run - a year too late.
Good for you - reading and relaxing.

Btw, it was a double header for NYC: zero again today.

I'm glad you're reading. Light cozies are just fine! If it works, it works! :D

My association sent out an email today saying that they are re-insulating the attics in all buildings. To do this, workmen need to have access to the unit for about four hours during the first week of August. My neighbor, who literally hasn't been out of his condo since March except to get the mail, called me freaking out about it. I don't really blame him. It's bad timing. He sent an email to our assn management. We"ll see what they say.
My mother, who lives alone in a small town in northern Florida (She's a very independent person.), is scheduled for a surgical procedure on Wednesday. She says it"s very minor, but I hate that I can't be there. It was suppossed to be Friday, but was moved up because they will once again be postponing elective surgeries in FL due to the COVID situation in Florida. A friend is trying to rearrange her schedule to be her. Keeping my fingers crossed!

One of the buildings I represent had to replace the cooling tower of its central a/c system at height of lockdown, before phased reopening. Considered essential construction, it required crane and street closure so old can be lifted down and new lifted up. And it required 25 apartments on the top floor be vacated for 6 hours in the area directly underneath the area of work. And the exact date was not going to be confirmed by NYC until 36 hours before. This was at peak self quarantine. Some people were high risk, one was recovering from COVID, one had tested positive but no symptoms, etc. Those who could not arrange to be somewhere else on their own, the building rented a block of hotel rooms at a nearby hotel so each could self-quarantine during that time. Some people stayed with friends in the building, wearing masks and staying in separare rooms. Others visited family and friends in a similar fashion.
All went smoothly. So hopefully management there will be as helpful to him.
I mean I am trying to figure out how to vacate my apartment for several hours to have cleaners in...difficult given I now WFH. I guess I could park myself with my laptop and a hotspot in the park. Must give some thought.
Lynne - good luck to your mom.

Btw, it was a double header for NYC: zero again today."
I have a feeling that somewhere there is already a survey out floating his name for VP. He'd be a good speaker for the democratic convention this summer. At this point it might be a virtual convention.

Just as Bloomberg puled NYC out of hell after 9/11.

3 inches sounds awesome. I love how manageable my hair is after a haircut, but I keep putting it off - one more week. It's the longest its been in 30 years. It took forever to grow out the pixie cut that my husband hated, and I'm enjoying the ability to put it up when it's hot.
I hope the friend can be there when she gets home. The first few days after surgery seems like the riskiest time to be alone. After my dad's surgery, the visiting nurse never even showed up. He didn't even tell me he was having surgery or I would have been there.

@ Theresa-I applaud NYC and your Governor for being the adults in the room. The Lady from Michigan is trying her best to follow his lead, but Michigan is obviously over loaded with stupid people. Last week I had to deliver completed taxes to some clients and while riding through the neighborhood I noticed lawn signs. On a navy blue background, huge white lettering spelling out IDIOT and in small letters below the Gov's name. I had the intense urge to drive my truck over the lawns and plow them down.
@Doughgirl, will keep your Mom in my thoughts. That must be so hard not to able to be with her-hugs to you!

My mom who lives in North Carolina is scheduled to have knee replacement surgery next month. I hope it still happens and they don't have to close down elective surgery again since NC's numbers are pretty high. Meanwhile my sister is dealing with the difficult decision on whether or not to send her 9 year old to school next month. Right now they are offering fully remote or in person 2 days a week with the rest remote.
I got an okay from the shoulder surgeon and don't have to see him any more. I am continuing in PT. My Nintendo Switch arrived today so I'm excited to set it up tonight.

Animal crossing should be arriving today so it's first. I also got Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers (because my fiance's daughter wanted to play it). I tried buying Smash Brothers from Amazon and they sent me an empty box, not buying any more games from them and I returned the box.

I can’t believe Amazon sent you an empty box. I’ve never had a problem with them before but it’s bound to happen sometime.
My husband love Super Smash Bros. and we both love Mario Kart.
Enjoy!!!

We have to clean everything after each use. The kids have to wash their hands when they move to something new. They are checked in outside of our school building, with a temperature check and questions about health and exposure. The parents are not allowed in the building.
Most wear masks, but meals, naps and outside time they don't wear mask.
We are teaching them rudimentary social distance by having them use airplane arms to check if they are too close.
It is pretty exhausting, but they were so happy to be back and they love being with their friends again.
I just hope that we are keeping them safe with all these measures.

It is all so exhausting.
@Joanne - oh my word, Lola is really working you! That Cone of Shame is not going away soon. You know, you need to remibd her that she brought this on herself...
And I would totally have either run over the signs or bought poster paint and in the dark of night altered them to Idiot lives here.

...along with photos of a lake with people crowded around over the weekend with no distancing and no masks. Sigh... Locals to the area were not impressed. (And I don't blame them.)

Today 3 players tested positive for C-19. Anyone shocked by this?😣

My mother had her minor surgery in Florida this morning. All went well and she is at home. She said she has virtually no pain!

Good to hear!

It's a good thing because I feel like I risked my life yesterday waiting to pick up our tax returns. It was supposed to be a quick low contact pick up on Tuesday, but they apparently lost one of my files. (I loved the accountant I had last year but she took a leave due to covid and her grandkids.)
I have never seen such a crowd there. I wonder if we'll see an uptick in cases in a week or two like after Memorial day.

That's great news about your mother.
I'll bet there are a lot of people setting up home gyms this year, or at least using exercise videos

Elevator arrives, on it 2 movers with dollies. No masks. I held the door and demanded to know where their masks were, saying not allowed in building without, there are a zillion signs. One had his protecting his neck so he pulled it up. Other had no mask at all. I then let elevator go...even if there wasn't currently a 2 person limit now, they had no masks on properly.
When I finally got downstairs, I hunted out the super and reported. When I came back from my short outing, movers were being closely watched by super hand had face coverings, although mover that never had a mask was using a very ill-fitting, inadequate bandanna.
Super mentioned there have been no COVID cases in the building and he wants to keep it that way.

Unfortunately, I think our best hope is in business these days. Even Walmart requires masks. Same as the Washington football team changing their name, they refused until the corporate sponsors threatened to leave and stores to stop selling merchandise. I never did understand why businesses didn't lobby for years to get National Health Insurance and take it out of their hands. Even if they paid tax for it, it would be predictable.

My daughter-in-law just texted us and told us that, if we wanted to get out of FL, they would be happy to have us stay with them in CO for as long as we wanted! That was so very sweet. She and my son have been married for 20 years and we've often spent a week or more together and we are very simpatico but that was an amazing offer.

I just saw that in the newspaper today! That is CRAZY! What the heck!!!?

Oh, I know and that's not the worst of it. The worst is the number of dead in a day, 156!

While, you know who says to slow down the testing we really need to do the opposite and get a quicker turnaround on the results so we can trace and quarantine people where necessary.
I've heard that in FL there is a high incidence among children and that is particularly upsetting.
I'm a little OCD about checking what is going on in my county and I've noticed a rise in cases among children. Thankfully our governor has said that schools cannot start in person classes in counties on the watch list.
The other side of that is preschools and ours falls into the essential service of child care. :(
So we remain open.

You should be able to walk-in tomorrow and have an answer quickly.
Meanwhile try to isolate yourself. .

In April a friend discovered he had bronchitis that had morphed into pneumonia, but he also had COVID19 test. There were a few tense days where he had to quarantine until results of test received, in a 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment where his family were living too. It was so difficult but turned out 'just' to be pneumonia. He was quite sick for some time but was able to recover at home and not quarantine from his family.
All ended well.
So I reiterate: go get tested.

Nancy, get the test. I hope you are healthy with no problems , but do be careful.

While, you know who says to slow down the testing we really need to do the opposite and get a quicker turnaround on the resul..."
But driving that far means staying in a hotel, I think that's way worse than an airplane. You may have to quarantine when you get to Colorado, but I suppose you aren't planning to go anywhere.

Hope it's ok, Nancy, but I agree. Get the test. Good luck!

Barbara, unless you are able to camp along the way? Then, you won't need hotels.

On a lighter note I'm glad you got that hair cut Joanne. The way things are going here I have a feeling they unfortunately are going to end up closing again.
I really can't believe Florida and Texas haven't started closing more things down with how crazy their numbers have been. Stay safe Barbara whatever you decide to do.

Barbara M - what a decision! I might opt for the drive to Colorado (but then, I love driving). Then again ... you'll have to go through some other states that are also "in the red zone" to get there.
BTW - my friend's son recently returned from a trip to Houston TX ... he and his driving partner left on Sunday July 5 and took two days to drive to Milwaukee. His mother had specific instructions for him on his return: Enter through the garage and go directly to the laundry room. Take off all your clothes ... there will be a clean robe for you to put on. Leave your suitcases in the laundry room and go immediately to take a shower. Put on the fresh clothes I leave out for you ... put the robe and the towels in the hamper. Go to your room and stay there for two weeks. I'll bring your meals and clean clothes / towels / sheets to you. Great to have you home again! We'll hug at the end of July.
His two weeks of confinement should be up on Tuesday. I haven't heard how he's doing, but am assuming no news is good news.
(He's in the seminary and this was a "mission" he was on to work with impoverished neighborhoods.)

Have fun, Joanne!

Relax, enjoy, and hope Lola relaxes too.
⛺ & 🏕 ... or is it more like this 🎪?

And that's in NYS which is better than most of the country!

Wow I was able to get appointments for 3 of us the next day. Michigan must be doing better at setting up testing than I thought they were.
NYC had it's first day of zero COVID19 deaths on Sunday! There were 10 statewide, but for NYC, at one point the COVID19 epicenter of the world, this is a hard won moment.
Today Governor Cuomo released during his press conference a poster, modeled on historic political posters, of NY's journey with COVID19, a poster he designed. Here's a link: https://now.ny.gov/page/-/individual%...
In case you are wondering, he is pulling no punches on the failure of the White House, the federal government, and state governors of 29 states who have their heads up their asses.
Other than that, I have finished 2 jigsaw puzzles and finally FINALLY am reading again. Super light cozies, but I am READING!
