Darryl Barney (darrylbarney) i know y’all are done with this and sorry i missed out. just wanted to pop in and say i feel bad for Stella. i’m at the part where she is enjoying Loretta’s company and questioning whether Loretta knows her secret. i wish she could just be herself! but her choice, as she says

reneeNaDaCherry (nadabomb) i just got this one from the library today. Too late for the group reading, but I will still take the time to read & finish it.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Well I would love to hear both of your thoughts on this book. I’m not ready to stop discussing it. I felt bad for Stella during the times that she and Loretta were being friends also. I don’t understand her choices but....who’s to say what is right and what is the wrong choice.

I sorta felt the same way! At the point I was wondering if she just wanted to be caught and stop living a lie.

Yes! We want to hear your thoughts!!

Darryl Barney (darrylbarney) same, Lulu. but it is apparent from her first meeting with Jude that that is not the case! sadly

message 107: by reneeNaDaCherry (new)

reneeNaDaCherry (nadabomb) Okay, Lulu.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I think Stella is torn between wanting her cake and eating it too. She misses the soul of Black people and clings to the privilege of White people. It cannot be that cut and dry but I believe it is the foundation for a lot more nuances.

Darryl Barney (darrylbarney) I agree so much, Dosha.

Darryl Barney (darrylbarney) Finally finished this. I really enjoyed it. I honestly am still confused about Reese but I am going to read everyone’s comments for insight. I kind of wish the story focused more on Diseree though and not Stella for the majority. Good read.

I am really hoping for a sequel to this because I believe book two would focus more on Desiree and let us know how she does away from that lil town of Mallard. I would also love to know how Reese and Jude make it together as a couple. Reece is transgender. Desiree wants grandchildren. Interesting. I'm not very interested in Kennedy, but to be fair, we need to inlclude her in book too also, lol. Maybe Kennedy will spill the beans on her mom to her dad and all hell will break loose.

Darryl Barney (darrylbarney) I would definitely read a sequel. Is Reese a trans man?

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Yes. Reece was born a female named Therea, left town and changed to a man. That’s what the operation was about.

Darryl Barney (darrylbarney) Ahhh, got it. Makes sense, thank you, Dosha.

Ivory T | 1 comments I did not like this ending at all
To many loose threads

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments That is why I keep saying there needs to be a sequel.

reneeNaDaCherry (nadabomb) My thoughts:

Desiree's life experiences got more of my attention throughout the story. Much more than Stella's life experiences did. It took me a moment to realize Reese was TRANS and in a relationship with Desiree's daughter Jude. I understood better when Reese mentioned that her dad wasn't blessed with the sons he wanted.

But that Stella has a lot to lose. Her husband, her daughter Kennedy and her lifestyle. Stella has chosen to live as a white woman. Yet knowing that she and her twin Desiree were born black girls in the small town of Mallard.
