Fiction by California-based writer about young boy with Oedipus complex who kills (or injures?) mother's boyfriend

I read the book in around 2015, I don't know how old it was. I am almost certain the writer is from California. It is set in the US, and about a boy who loves his mother, they drive around and stay in a motel and different places. At one point, they are staying somewhere for a while because she has a boyfriend, and her son either kills or injures this man. I believe the book is from the boys perspective but I don't remember it very well. Thanks so much!
