SOLVED. Children's Fantasy/Sci-fi(?) alternating comic and text chapters [s]

Unfortunately I don't remember much details about the plot but I think it was like a ragtag group trying to help a female bear (troll? golem?) get back to her family, which she had gotten separated from, and journeying through this mysterious mountain with weird secrets and I think a cryogenic chamber??? The illustrations I think were in light blue and yellow. Some rodent character? Maybe a hot air balloon??? I believe I read it in the late 2000s (before the 2010s) and it was pretty new a the time. More square than rectangular but not a small book and written in English, borrowed from a library in the Pacific North West. I think it was a collaboration between the writer and illustrator? Sorry none of these details are very definite but if you can help that would be greatly appreciated!
