The only plot related details I can recall after 50 years is convertibles figure prominently and in one book, a major character dies. The best hint is the main character's name is Danny. I think the last name was Orleans or something close to that. Sorry, but that is all I can remember.

Better late than never - Sorry. Yes, that is the series. I'm not sure if that is the one I remember (I couldn't find an electronic nor paper copy), but definitely the right series. Thanks!
