SOLVED. YA Fantasy, Brother & Sister searching for parents in alternate universe, Talking Aphid. [s]

I remember reading this book when i was in grade school in about 1985.

I remember that it's about a brother and sister that are searching for their parents in some kind of alternate universe, it has something to do with magic, and they have an aphid that talks to them and is their guide. The aphid lives on a plant they carry around with them I think.

I've been racking my brains for a long time. Any help would be appreciated.

OMG, you nailed it. I just ordered a copy. Although I distinctly remember an aphid because I had to look up what that was in the dictionary. Maybe he's a minor character. THANKS SO MUCH!

i don't remember an aphid at all, but then it was years ago I read it. Time for a reread I guess!
