Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Bumping for Susan & Teresa! :)

Edit all the info you need is in Message 1 & Message 299 of this thread.

& there is no November read as I'm away just about all of November & there was a general feeling that people wanted to catch up on their reading. But like I said in Message 293 if you guys change your minds while I'm away I won't mind!

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments Thanks Carol!

Hana | 652 comments Excellent. I'm so far behind on updates and reviews but I'm looking forward to some quiet New England winter reading with you all later.

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments I would like to nominate the Quiet Gentleman - it is one of the GH I have not read yet, so I have no ideas if it is well-liked or not. If it is not well-received, How about Black Moth?

I'll make the nominations

Powder & Patch (me)
The Quiet Gentleman (Critterbee)
The Tollgate (RaiRaiKen)
A Civil Contract (Amy)
Cousin Kate (Andrea)

Final 5!

Oh, good choice on The Quiet Gentleman :) I'm trying to acquire my own copy thru Ebay :D

How about The Tollgate?

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ RaiRaiKen wrote: "How about The Tollgate?"

Added to the nominations in post 305.

message 308: by MaryC (new)

MaryC Clawsey | 485 comments Either The Quiet Gentleman or The Tollgate would be especially good!

message 309: by Amy (new)

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments A civil contract? Everyone talks about it but I have yet to read it. It would be fun to read it with everyone.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments Cousin Kate is my nomination.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Amy wrote: "A civil contract? Everyone talks about it but I have yet to read it. It would be fun to read it with everyone."

Civil Contact added to post 305. One spot to go!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ & we have our 5. Cousin Kate is added to post 305.

Nominations closed

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ & the poll is up. I'll do the broadcast message later tonight. It's running for slightly less time than usual, as we don't usually get many votes the last few days & from next weekI'll be a bit pushed for time.

message 314: by Amy (new)

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments I don't mean to bully this group but I REALLY want to read Civil Contract with you guys because I know it will be so much fun to talk about. Please vote for it this month! I promise I will be less obnoxious from here on out if you do.

:)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Amy wrote: "I don't mean to bully this group but I REALLY want to read Civil Contract with you guys because I know it will be so much fun to talk about. Please vote for it this month! I promise I will be less ..."

I can't believe how different the results look from last night! It's going to be close I think.

message 316: by Amy (new)

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments I guess I should've asked of campaigning for your book is even legal in this thread. Hope I didn't break any rules and get kicked out. I promise to behave in the future.

I don't see why we can't. All part of the fun! & I gave my reasons for Powder & Patch when I nominated it. :)

message 318: by Hana (new)

Hana | 652 comments Hmmmn. Amy your lobbying campaign might pay off with me ;) TheThe Quiet Gentleman is one of my all-time favorites, but A Civil Contract is supposedly so not her usual. I'm intrigued by the Peninsular War connection since I loved The Spanish Bride.

message 319: by Hana (new)

Hana | 652 comments Oh gosh. Powder & Patch would be fun! Too many choices :)

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments Sorry to be a total wet blanket, misery-guts and spoilsport, but I don't like the lobbying. It's like saying "my justification for reading this book is much more important than yours". On the other hand, giving your reasons for nominating the book in the first place is totally different in my opinion. Just saying ......!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Well the Americans have a political campaign running at the moment -I don't think they can help themselves! ;) :D I kid, I kid!

& I love any GH related passion!

message 322: by Hana (new)

Hana | 652 comments lol Carol, you are TOO right! And the worst thing for us is that our presidential campaigns have a longer gestation period than pregnant elephants. Wish us well in our excruciating extended and painful 'confinement'. :/

message 323: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 613 comments I voted for A Civil Contract because it tends to spark good discussion (as well as it being a Heyer I haven't reread recently).

I remember reading somewhere that NZ contests it's entire election in the time The States contests one primary (have I worded that right?)

But if you want a good snicker at our expense,Google our changing the flag fiasco. :/

message 325: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments By the time our elections actually roll around, most Americans are living their lives with their hands over their ears and duct tape over their eyes and their mouths spewing insanities. Driving gets dangerous.

That so made me laugh! I don't know how you put up with it: as an outsider, it feels like the campaigning goes on for the full 4 years between actual elections!!

message 327: by Louise Sparrow (new)

Louise Sparrow (louisex) | 460 comments I never liked A Civil Contract so I'd prefer one of the others but I'll give it another go if it gets in.

I don't really see the point in campaigning for a book to be honest, everyone has their own favourites, we'll get to the all eventually.

message 328: by Hana (last edited Oct 12, 2015 01:50PM) (new)

Hana | 652 comments Carol, I actually did tune in to the flag fiasco. I sort of liked the fern designs but I hated the black and white schemes and blue and red ferns are kind of weird. Why did no one do a green or silvery fern on a white ground? It would have been quite pretty, rather like the Canadian maple leaf flag.

On the US contests it's much worse than you think. Let me clarify with a spoiler to reduce general pain.(view spoiler) Now, aren't you glad you live in New Zealand, Carol?

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Susan wrote: "Karlyne wrote: "By the time our elections actually roll around, most Americans are living their lives with their hands over their ears and duct tape over their eyes and their mouths spewing insanit..."

Oh, as Hana points out in her spoiler below, it DOES last four years. And then it starts all over. Now I remember why I've always wanted to emigrate to New Zealand...

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ &we would love to have you Karlyne!

Hana I've replied to you in the Royal Escape thread. :)

message 331: by MaryC (new)

MaryC Clawsey | 485 comments Hana, Karlyne, do you suppose we could ever get Presidential campaigning limited to the actual election year? People could be spoken of as potential or promising candidates before then, but no one could formally declare candidacy before New Year's of the election year. Then we could pack the debates, primaries, caucuses, and conventions all into those few months; and when we elected a President, we could actually pay more attention to his or her proposals and policies, rather than beginning to focus even before the Inauguration on who the next one is going to be! The process could be reduced from an elephant pregnancy to a human one!

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments MaryC wrote: "Hana, Karlyne, do you suppose we could ever get Presidential campaigning limited to the actual election year? People could be spoken of as potential or promising candidates before then, but no one ..."

I wonder... Has it always been this crazy, and it just seems worse these days? I can see why a long time lapse was practical in the days before instant media. When people had to actually campaign in the flesh, and their words were only spoken to a few crowds and reported in the newspapers, it took time to reach everyone. But now? Now it just means the agendas and the personalities are forced down our throats until we're choking.

message 333: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments It is nice that at least the local political ads don't start this early - and that's because they cost lots and lots of $$$!

message 334: by Critterbee❇ (new)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments I dislike lobbying for books as well.

Here in the US people are preparing for the election 5 years from now...

Blech!

message 335: by Amy (new)

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments It appears I have inadvertently made people vote against Civil Contract with my enthusiasm.

*sigh*

Darn.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments Amy, A Civil Contract will undoubtedly come up again as I am waiting for Cousin Kate to win a poll.

message 337: by Amy (new)

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments Andrea - that is true. There are only so many titles we can vote for. :)

message 338: by Critterbee❇ (new)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments "Cousin Kate" is on my 'staff picks list' at the library right now! I am sure we will read it soon, and "A Civil Contract" as well.

message 339: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 1729 comments a love A Civil Contract but I voted for The Toll Gate because it's been longer since I've read it. they are both good!

message 340: by MaryC (new)

MaryC Clawsey | 485 comments As I recall, The Toll Gate may offer us another candidate for Favorite Hero. (Is that a spoiler?)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ MaryC wrote: "As I recall, The Toll Gate may offer us another candidate for Favorite Hero. (Is that a spoiler?)"

Powder & Patch & the Quiet Gentleman both have appealing heroes as well.

& the poll has closed & The Quiet Gentleman has won comfortably!

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 2786 comments So we will start reading and discussing Quiet Gentleman in December?

This is my first first read of GH since I read Penhallow shudder a little while ago, I am excited.

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments I've never read Quiet Gentleman and now that I broke down and paid for a library card again, I'm good to go. :)

ETA: Or not. I just checked, and my library doesn't have this one, so I'll have to pass.

message 345: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 613 comments Tadiana, your library doesn't do interlibrary loan?

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments Margaret wrote: "Tadiana, your library doesn't do interlibrary loan?"

They do, but they cost $3. I'm not sure I'm motivated enough to do that for this book, since they have several other Heyer books that I still haven't read. Although I do HATE to miss out on buddy reading with you all. ;)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ & you have till the 1st of December - it may turn up at a second hand book shop or a garage sale!

Honestly if you guys could see all the hardback Georgette Heyer's at my work you would weep! I think the others will probably biff them the minute I'm out of the country! they know I hate throwing books out!

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments One of my GR friends who lives about 20 or 30 minutes drive from me noticed my posts above and PM'd me, offering to loan me TQG. So we're going to try to meet up sometime in the next month. This will be the first time I've met a GR friend in real life. Kind of cool. :)
