Jacquie Scuitto | 261 comments DC has long been one of my favorites. Dominic may start out as less than admirable but in it is astonishing what the love of a good -- and eminently sensible --woman can do! Loved meeting characters from TOS as well as the next generation.
Yes,Louise Sparrow, the discussions should be lively!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I just tried to message Christy B to see if this topic could be "pinned" to the top of the discussion topics, but she's not accepting messages at the moment.

Could someone on her friend list try messaging her? :)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Bumping this to remind everyone that the Devil's Cub read starts tomorrow!

message 111: by Amy (new)

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments I will speed read (um ... listen!) through the rest of my Frederica audiobook and then start Devil's Cub. I wasn't impressed the first time but it might grow on me.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Boy the month has really rocketed past!

Just a reminder that the Regency Buck group read starts on the 1st of May. Has everyone who wants to participate been able to get a copy?

message 113: by Linda (new)

Linda | 131 comments I picked up my copy from the library a few days ago, just waiting to finish another book before I dive on in!

Ifurita | 27 comments I just got mine from the library, along with a bunch of other Heyers. Trying not to binge, but I have no self control...

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ :) Ah, but a GH addiction is the one addiction you should never try to control!

message 116: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Absolutely! It's a healthy addiction!

message 117: by Lori (new)

Lori Mulligan Davis | 196 comments I agree with Carol and Karlyne that GH is a healthy addiction. I, myself, listen to GH on my smart phone using Audible. Which means I am a productive human being, busily scrubbing, cooking, and decluttering, all the while enjoying the exploits of "Arabella," "Cotillion," "The Talisman Ring," etc. I am never bored with housework and gardening because GH and other author friends are there to support me. (Many times if you purchase the Kindle edition, the Audible is deeply discounted. And they go on sale regularly.)

message 118: by Hana (new)

Hana | 652 comments I've got my copy of Regency Buck. Totally agree this is one indulgence I don't feel guilty about in the slightest!

I do this too!

message 120: by Linda (new)

Linda | 131 comments Well shoot. I find I'm just not going to have time to read Regency Buck this month with everyone. I have the book checked out from the library, already renewed it once, yet I still have not been able to start it. I find this happens each spring when my reading time decreases due to diverting my time to the yard and garden, and an increase in family outings.

So...I will have to catch up on the Alastair series later in the year as I would still like to finish it, not having read any of them before now.

Well, drat, Linda! But when you do read it, jump in the threads with your comments, too.

Yes, I will Karlyne.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I'm thinking it might be time to gather GH nominations for July given that it is harder for some members to get copies.

I thought I might leave this open for 7 days or until we get 5 nominations, which ever comes first.

I'm happy to lead any of the historical/romance ones or A Blunt Instrument (mystery) except for My Lord John because its My Lord John or Charity Girl as I reread that one at the start of the year. So if either of those 2 are successful could the nominator lead? :) same if any of the other mysteries is the successful book.

I looked up which books have alread been read as a group .

2010 The Black Moth
2012 Lady of Quality
2014 Cotillion
Frederica
Sylvester
Footsteps in the Dark (mystery)
The Nonesuch
The Unknown Ajax
Death in the Stocks (mystery)
The Foundling.

Unless anyone objects, I'd like to include The Black Moth & Lady of Quality as possible nominations - especially TBM, as the discussion never really got going.

Sorry for the long post. Anything not clear - please ask! I'm looking forward to everyone's ideas!

Jessica (stress_less_jess) | 32 comments The Black Moth sounds good; I know it's been a while since I read it. Personally I'm not a fan of Heyer's mysteries.

message 127: by Hana (new)

Hana | 652 comments The Black Moth sounds good to me as well. I seem to recall it's one of her Georgian romances and if I read it, it was a long time ago.

But I'm also fine with a mystery as a change of pace.

message 128: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments A Blunt Instrument has one of her best mysteries and some of her best lines in it, and I haven't read it in ages. Or The Black Moth, because there are some pretty funny parts in it, too!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Hana wrote: "The Black Moth sounds good to me as well. I seem to recall it's one of her Georgian romances and if I read it, it was a long time ago.

The Black Moth is interesting because it was GH's first book, written when she was only 17.

Normally I'd say let's go with that except I have a feeling that QnB isn't a fan of the Georgian titles. She did say Regency.

I'll see if I can message her. :)

message 130: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments The Georgians just feel heavier, somehow. Maybe it's the clothes...

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments The Black Moth is also interesting because These Old Shades is the semi-sequel to it. Since we've just read TOS, it would be fun to see what GH changed (besides the names) when she wrote TOS and what remained the same. I read TBM several years ago and wouldn't mind rereading it; it's not one of her best, but it's not bad.

Also TBM is a freebie on Gutenberg because it's so old, which is always nice. (Amazon charges 99 cents for it.)

message 132: by Louise Sparrow (new)

Louise Sparrow (louisex) | 460 comments My vote would be for something that hasn't been discussed yet... how about The Reluctant Widow or The Talisman Ring?

Yes - I am so so fond of this novel. First one I read in it's entirety (I read part of The Black Moth in The Ladies Home Journal but I had to leave my aunts before the final instalments arrived!) I wish I had remembered how much TOS owed to TBM & I would have proposed doing it first.

So we'll see what QNPB says. :)

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments Here are a few of GH's other books that I'd like to read or reread, that aren't on the group read list Carol posted above:

The Corinthian
Black Sheep
The Grand Sophy

Just throwing these out there for future consideration. :)

Which one would you prefer to go in a poll, Louise?

I don't want to nominate any this month, just because the Alastair/Audley read was my idea & I want everyone to have a say. :) I will vote though.

Three of my all time favourites Tadiana!

This group unfortunately was selfish enough to read my 2 of my favourite Regencies (Cotillion & Frederica) before I joined! ;) :D

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments ***Carol*** wrote: "This group unfortunately was selfish enough to read my 2 of my favourite Regencies (Cotillion & Frederica) before I joined! ;) :D

Both of those are also on my read/reread list. :)

message 138: by Louise Sparrow (new)

Louise Sparrow (louisex) | 460 comments I don't mind Carol, I'm just not very fond of the Black Moth so I picked two of my favourites that weren't on the list and that I don't remember being mentioned very much.

I love Cotillion and Frederica and never tire of re-reading them, The Grand Sophy too, but I thought that already had a thread... maybe it just dominated another topic.

Not necessarily connected to a group read, but I wonder if there is a book that features in everyone's favourites?

I'm intending to squeeze these rereads in some time this year. I've been very careful to keep out of their threads here!

Yes I thought a Civil Contract had already been read because it comes up so often, but not as a group read.

I've seen different polls about GH around the internet & the 2 that seem to top them are Devil's Club or The Grand Sophy. I might have a hunt round later & see if I can find them.

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments I think A Civil Contract comes up so often because it's my favorite, and I work it into a lot of comments...(heheheee)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Karlyne wrote: "I think A Civil Contract comes up so often because it's my favorite, and I work it into a lot of comments...(heheheee)"

My memory of it is it's her most realistic romance. I want to reread as I think in the past I was too hard on the hero.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Ok, QNPB has sent me a message back & she would like to nominate A Grand Sophy.

Louise, I'll put you down as nominating The Reluctant Widow :)

So that gives us;

The Reluctant Widow
The Grand Sophy
The Black Moth
A Blunt Instrument

Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ | 363 comments Those nominations look good to me.

message 145: by Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ (last edited May 20, 2015 08:52PM) (new)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Yes, but how to choose? I don't remember A Blunt Instrument, but the other 3 are among my favourites! (first world problem, right? :D)

message 146: by Jacquie (new)

Jacquie Scuitto | 261 comments I'm still rooting for The Tollgate, a Regency but without the aristocracy and more of an adventure/mystery than the others. The Unknown Ajax is one that's been mentioned but not, I think, as a group read?
So many to choose from!

The Toll Gate is also cool bec it's from the Hs perspective rather than that of the h.

The Unknown Ajax was done as a Group read around October last year.

OK I'll add the Tollgate to the nominations list & that gives us 5 nominations. So nominations now closed. :)

I'll try to put the poll up tonight, but I've heard polls on GR have been glitchy so let's see how I get on.

Nominations are;

The Reluctant Widow
The Grand Sophy
The Black Moth
A Blunt Instrument
The Tollgate

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Ok poll up now. I sent messages to everyone I could think of - grovelling apologies if I missed anyone out!

Because I thought I sent it to myself & I didn't. :/

Just follow the link & vote everyone.

Poll should stay open till the 1st of June.

Edit: OK that's interesting - even as a moderator I don't see the results until I vote myself! :D
