I missed the start on Venetia, too and I'll probably have to pass if I'm to tackle all the books in my TBR pile, but count me in on the others--most of which I have not read yet! I'm particularly interested in An Infamous Army. I loved The Spanish Bride--GH's pure historical fiction is excellent.

Woohoo Hana! I was scared I'd be reading An Infamous Army by myself!
Woohoo Hana! I was scared I'd be reading An Infamous Army by myself!I haven't read her historicals in a number of years, but my favourite was The Conqueror. My least favourite was (shudder) My Lord John.
I know that lonesome feeling, but I know we'll have fun reading together even if it's just the two of us :)) The Conqueror was terrific! I haven't read Lord John, but I'll take your word on it.

You would have to seriously twist my arm to get me to read My Lord John again.
You would have to seriously twist my arm to get me to read My Lord John again. But I made a bit of a daft mistake about it! My late Dad had hardcovers of Simon the Coldheart (one of the reissues) My Lord John & Lady of Quality. I took Simon the Coldheart as it was one of my Dad's favourite books when he was a boy. All 3 of them were among my least favourite Heyer's so I left the other 2 & they went with other junk to a charity shop. But now all I need for a complete GH romance/historical collection is My Lord John & the Great Roxhythe! I may pass on the Great Roxhythe as the Arrow wasn't released here, but I am now looking in markets & garage sales for My Lord John.

Are we going to comment here, or will there be separate threads?

I actually picked up my reserved copy at the library this weekend, so I'm all ready to go!
I pulled my copy out of the shelf. It's another one of those that I inherited from my grandmother's collection and it is falling to pieces. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep it together for the month.

I should have been watching this group closer--I would've joined the group read of These Old Shades! When does the next one start--beginning of April?

I am still planning to read These Old Shades and have my library copy waiting. I just had too many other books being read and couldn't fit another in until I've finished with a couple of them. I'll be starting to read These Old Shades this weekend.

Yes don't worry about being behind. I was months behind on some of my reads & still posted!
Yes Devil's Cub next month! My favourite book of all time! But don't worry - I can handle constructive criticism of it.
Now where did I put my duelling pistols? :D
I'm still getting to this one as well. Been trying to finish off something else (and a bunch of assignments). Should start later in the week

I'll try to join you this weekend, then, Linda. I'd be happy to have some company. I've read it before but it's been a few years.
Great! Looks like there will be three of us starting the book soon (if you don't get to it though, no worries!). This will be my first time reading this one.

     NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! I just started reading These Old Shades today and I went to renew it as I checked it out from the library 3+ weeks ago, but there are two people waiting in line for it so I can't renew it. :( I am not a quick enough reader to get through it in two days. I'm sorry everyone. I'm going to have to get back in line and check it out later in the year.
So now I'll be reading Devil's Cub out of order. :(
Too bad! It's probably too late now, if you're already returned it, but how much are your library's daily fines? I've been known to decide that a dollar is worth paying to keep a book a few more days, but then we only get charged 15 cents a day.

It's due on Sunday. We get charged 10 cents per day, I would just hate to think that someone is counting on getting the book by a certain day. But, perhaps another two days wouldn't be so bad? Now you have me rethinking...
I was also thinking I might be able to find it at the used bookstore, but to find a GH in the first place usually takes luck, and to find the exact title would be a miracle.
Two or four extra days isn't going to kill them. When a book gets returned is a random process; I never count on a particular date when I'm waitlisted. Read the book! :D

Now I'm hoping none of my librarian friends on GR come and chastise me for being a bad influence. o.O

Exactly! How many Georgette Heyer fans can there be? (well, now that's a silly question)
The question is, how many Georgette Heyer fans are (a) part of our group, (b) live in Linda's area, and (c) are on the library hold list for this particular book. Pretty long odds. :)

"My cows don't read" is often the response to getting a library district set up. Sigh.
ha ha! And there are TWO people waiting for my book, not just one.... I will try to read quickly, I promise!

We have a "city" (pop. 2800) library, but as the administration changes, so does its support. The current admin seems to see that we need a library, but a couple of years ago I really thought the mayor was going to shut it down. It costs the city less than $60,000 a year to run it. That includes all wages and all expenses, and I think that's an incredible bargain, but, as I said, there is a pervasive attitude that a library is unimportant. We're only here for a couple more years before we retire to the mountains, but, in the meantime, I'm on the library board (unpaid, by the way!) and I try to stay positive. This poor little area needs its library!
I have never lived where I had no library available, even as a child in a very small town in Maine many decades ago, and can't imagine doing so! Libraries and second-hand bookshops Have been two of my main happy places!

It's the changes to what's being provided to school libraries over here that is really concerning!
It's the changes to what's being provided to school libraries over here that is really concerning! But back to GH - it is quite encouraging that Linda's library has 2 reserves for TOS. I know GH wrote some real turkeys but so did Du Maurier & Christie & they get a lot more repect. I'm hoping in my lifetime that the best of her works start to be considered classics!

Those of us who consider her books to be classics are in good company. Michael Dirda, the Pulitzer Prize winning book critic for the Washington Post, includes her in his book Classics for Pleasure. Among other things he says "Georgette Heyer remains as witty as any writer of the past century..."
