I haven't read her historicals in a number of years, but my favourite was The Conqueror. My least favourite was (shudder) My Lord John.

But I made a bit of a daft mistake about it! My late Dad had hardcovers of Simon the Coldheart (one of the reissues) My Lord John & Lady of Quality. I took Simon the Coldheart as it was one of my Dad's favourite books when he was a boy. All 3 of them were among my least favourite Heyer's so I left the other 2 & they went with other junk to a charity shop. But now all I need for a complete GH romance/historical collection is My Lord John & the Great Roxhythe! I may pass on the Great Roxhythe as the Arrow wasn't released here, but I am now looking in markets & garage sales for My Lord John.

I haven't read it in years, but I lot of the history has stayed with me. So count me in, too!

I'm going to try to fit in all of the group's 2015 reads as long as I can find each book in time. I haven't read any of the books on the list.

It's one of my favorite books. Pure brilliance!

Hope everyone has been able to organise a copy!

Are we going to comment here, or will there be separate threads?

Ok!

I actually picked up my reserved copy at the library this weekend, so I'm all ready to go!

Devil's Cub is next, right?

It's only mid-March, Tadiana! I am still planning to read These Old Shades and have my library copy waiting. I just had too many other books being read and couldn't fit another in until I've finished with a couple of them. I'll be starting to read These Old Shades this weekend.

Thanks Karlyne!"
Yes don't worry about being behind. I was months behind on some of my reads & still posted!
Yes Devil's Cub next month! My favourite book of all time! But don't worry - I can handle constructive criticism of it.
Now where did I put my duelling pistols? :D

I'll try to join you this weekend, then, Linda. I'd be happy to have some company. I've read it before but it's been a few years.

I just started reading These Old Shades today and I went to renew it as I checked it out from the library 3+ weeks ago, but there are two people waiting in line for it so I can't renew it. :( I am not a quick enough reader to get through it in two days. I'm sorry everyone. I'm going to have to get back in line and check it out later in the year.
So now I'll be reading Devil's Cub out of order. :(

Hmmm...I never thought of that. I went to renew online just now so I haven't returned it yet. It's due on Sunday. We get charged 10 cents per day, I would just hate to think that someone is counting on getting the book by a certain day. But, perhaps another two days wouldn't be so bad? Now you have me rethinking...
I was also thinking I might be able to find it at the used bookstore, but to find a GH in the first place usually takes luck, and to find the exact title would be a miracle.

Thanks! You've sold me. :)

And I wonder if whomever is waiting is one our group...

Hey, everyone, give us a shout if you live in Seattle area and are on the library hold list for These Old Shades! Lol.

Exactly! How many Georgette Heyer fans can there be? (well, now that's a silly question)

Well, if Linda lived in my area, the odds would be worth gambling on... Oh, dear, did that sound like I live in a semi-literate area? "My cows don't read" is often the response to getting a library district set up. Sigh.

*snorts*

Your response should be "Mine do and they want a library already!". :D

We have a "city" (pop. 2800) library, but as the administration changes, so does its support. The current admin seems to see that we need a library, but a couple of years ago I really thought the mayor was going to shut it down. It costs the city less than $60,000 a year to run it. That includes all wages and all expenses, and I think that's an incredible bargain, but, as I said, there is a pervasive attitude that a library is unimportant. We're only here for a couple more years before we retire to the mountains, but, in the meantime, I'm on the library board (unpaid, by the way!) and I try to stay positive. This poor little area needs its library!

But back to GH - it is quite encouraging that Linda's library has 2 reserves for TOS. I know GH wrote some real turkeys but so did Du Maurier & Christie & they get a lot more repect. I'm hoping in my lifetime that the best of her works start to be considered classics!

Those of us who consider her books to be classics are in good company. Michael Dirda, the Pulitzer Prize winning book critic for the Washington Post, includes her in his book Classics for Pleasure. Among other things he says "Georgette Heyer remains as witty as any writer of the past century..."

Devil's Cub next month!"
I'm really looking forward to discussing this one! I hope I don't lose some friends ...
