My memory is that he finds himself in a roman colosseum? He isn't completely surprised though because being able to walk between worlds is an inherited trait from his father I think? But he can't control it.

I also think I remember a black panther/jaguar/leopard?

This YA book would have had to come out before 2010 based on when I read the first chapter of it in a Borders, publish date could be anything from 1990-2009? It seems similar to His Dark Materials in some concept and world stuff, but I've looked at those books and they don't have this scene I remember.
