The character go to a school to hone is powers / fighting capabilities to eventually join the military in a specialized group. During his time he gets stuck in a world where the special creature he has can be found. I remember in the town he grew up in he fell in love with what I think I as a butchers daughter. The father doesn’t like him at all. When he had first found his stone he had tried to sell it for food. A stranger comes into town and over time it turns out that stranger is an officer for the special military group. I remember the character being friends with both elves and dwarves alike.

Also, it may sound similar to Eragon however it isn’t of that series. This is a different series to itself.

There are a couple differences to what you said but it sounds similar.
Can u give more details on the special creature and the special military group please?
