ABANDONED. YA fiction. Main character is led through a cave by a tribe of people that are very sensitive to light - 2004-10.

The book was a YA fiction or sci fi i read in around 2005. It was around the same time that the Cherub series was coming out. So roughly between 2004-10 ish.

Plot events I remember:
At one point in the series, the main characters travels to a place where they have to go into a cave and it is very deep as a shortcut to avoid something. I believe they traveled to the place via some kind of portal that was the cliff hanger at the end of the previous book in the series.

At some point in the book, they're led through the cave by a group of people that have been in the darkness of the cave so long that they can't even stand the smallest bit of light.
They basically hold hands and get led through this cave by these people. I remember one of the cave people took them close to the light to the detriment of his health and took some kind of damage from the light exposure and it was very heart felt.

Was that event that you remember the only scene in a cave? Or was the majority of the plot revolving around the underground and people that lived there? How many books were in the series?
