Bahar | 2 comments This book was written by a British author. I read it circa 2007-2009, when I was in 5th grade and so I know it is either YA or marketed to pre-teens. This author wrote a lot of books with similar themes (abusive mothers, daughters dealing with the repercussions) and I read all of them but this one I remember most vividly. The girl in the book had a mother who was alcoholic maybe but she was definitely dysfunctional, she began dating a man who had very "icy blue eyes", and the girl saw he was abusive but her mother did not. The girl also had a younger sister (could have been brother, but it was a sibling) whom she was very protective of. There is a very specific scene I remember in which the girl can't find her mother after a long night, she is with her younger sister and the power in their house goes out, and I believe the stepfather was going to harm them in some way. She is searching every drawer in the house for a flashlight and I distinctly remember the author listing every object in the drawers, then saying "no flashlight". For example: "Letters. Pens. Paper. No flashlight." This was repeated for dramatic effect. There is also a scene I remember in which the main character is walking her younger sibling somewhere and a truck passes by, and in the truck is the mothers boyfriend, and she comments about how his eyes were icy blue when he stared at them. This author was huge, I remember, I read all of her books but I cannot for the life of me remember her name or the name of the book. The setting was definitely England and the author was British for sure. Please help!
