I read the book in 2016 and I remember that it was fairly new at the time.
In the book, the kid gets dropped off at summer camp and is approached by a rich guy who offers him a chance to go around the world. He has unlimited money, and he can go any path he wants, but he has to get back before any of the other kids who were approached by different rich people. The team he was on was called Team Magellan. There were a set of rules and he had to follow them or he'd be taken to a 'detention center' where he had to just wait for a little bit. At some point, the kid lost his credit card and had to go around for a while more without any money. He ends up on a boat at some point with a Russian fisherman and another kid.

Are you positive you read it in 2016?

The Nebula Secret has Team Magellan, Team Cousteau, Team Galileo, and Team Earhart, but that wasn't pubbed until 2018.
