I read a few of these books around 1989. I can't remember any plot, just the transport aspect where the boy's personality or 'essence' could travel through space and be placed in an automaton body and there was some confusion of identity aspects. They were definitely meant for age 12 readers. Thanks for your help!

This book is called My Trip to Alpha I, by Alfred Slote. I found it by an extensive search of the SOLVED board.
