Jamie Dacyczyn (readsintrees) | 297 comments I was just rereading "Jacob Have I Loved" by Katherine Paterson, and a rural doctor scene near the end made me think of a scene from another book....but I can't remember any details besides one scene!

The scene I remember is that there's someone (a woman?) trying to save a child who can't breathe for some reason. There is some kind of bubble/film in the child's throat, blocking the airway. I assume this is historical and rural because there's no doctor available. A man is also there, and he says something like, "I've seen this performed once before" and then takes some egg shells, dries them, and crushes them into a small pieces. He scoops the shell fragments into his mouth, and then blows them down the child's throat. The sharp edges of the eggshells pop the bubble and the child can breathe again.

I THINK it was fiction, and historical (though possible contemporary when it was written). I think I would have read it in the 90s, but may have been published earlier than that. I kind of feel like this was at least a moderately popular book, so I'll feel silly for not remembering what it was...?

Ah, yes! As soon as I read that title, I knew it was right. Would not have remembered it on my own, but google confirms that this scene was in it. Thanks!
