I think I read this book in the late 80s or maybe early 90s. It was either a chapter book or early middle grade. It starts with the mc trying to remember a shopping list his mom sent him to the store for so he hums a song and the list is milk, bread, and peanut butter.

There is some mystery and the kid ends up catching adult robbers at either a bubblegum or candy factory. I thought bubblegum factory was in the title, but I can't find it.
