The Book Riot challenge (which I'm doing) has the same prompt, and I chose Let the Right One In (originally in Swedish) by John Ajvide Lindqvist. But I've read a lot of books that were originally in another language - books by Haruki Murakami (Norwegian Wood, 1Q84, After Dark, etc.) and Stieg Larsson (the Millennium trilogy) are some really good ones.
Jemma wrote: "Any ideas? I do not know what to read for this one..."The publisher Europa Editions has mostly books that are written in different languages. I definitely recommend The Elegance of the Hedgehog. ;D
Lydia wrote: "I'm choosing Beowulf for this - old English is quite different from English now. :)"Beowulf is a good idea! I might consider it, but right now I have Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto set aside.
Someone should have a go at read Trainspotting or A Clockwork Orange for this topic. Both of them are particularly a foreign language still, and are very good.
It took me ages to tead Trainspotting. I had to read it out loud so I could work out what the words were!
@jennifer, I read it when the movie come out when I was 14 or so and remember thinking it was like Shakespeare, which we were doing at school - get a few pages in and it becomes second nature but have a break and you have to start from scratch. Same with clockwork orange which I read when I was 19 or so. Clockwork Orange was worth it but I can't really remember whether trainspotting was or not, I know I never bothered with any of his others though!
@Jennifer A Clockwork Orange is one of my favorites. I love how Burgess utilized made up words + Russian to create Nadsat.
I read 'The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle' by Haruki Murakami. Originally published in Japanese.I usually really love Murakami's books even though when asked about the plot there never really seems to be anything happening. Which is the same for this one.
I guess it must be the writing style that keeps me interested and turning the pages.
This one was a bit too long though, 600 pages of not much happening.
I read Kitchen for this challenge, and it was breathtaking....the amount of emotions I felt while reading this were such a whirlwind, but a good one. I love how Yoshimoto writes - her words are simple, but powerful enough to pack a punch or to make a person sob. So, so good. The stories are simple but complex enough for anyone to relate to. I'll be thinking about this one for a long time.
I read The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald (originally in Swedish). It is a book for every book lover, which I'm sure everyone here is. So, if you're not sure yet what book to read, give this one a try!
