But I've read a lot of books that were originally in another language - books by Haruki Murakami (Norwegian Wood, 1Q84, After Dark, etc.) and Stieg Larsson (the Millennium trilogy) are some really good ones.

The publisher Europa Editions has mostly books that are written in different languages. I definitely recommend The Elegance of the Hedgehog. ;D

Beowulf is a good idea! I might consider it, but right now I have Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto set aside.

Both of them are particularly a foreign language still, and are very good.

I usually really love Murakami's books even though when asked about the plot there never really seems to be anything happening. Which is the same for this one.
I guess it must be the writing style that keeps me interested and turning the pages.
This one was a bit too long though, 600 pages of not much happening.
