Looking for the title of a book that I read as a kid. It's probably YA fiction and was probably published between 1965 and 1980 (probably the beginning or middle of that range). A young girl works as a detective for an artist in or around New York City. I remember that the artist's assistant, who makes the frames for his paintings, was in a car accident and was an artist himself before that.

Why does the artist need a detective?

I don't know. There was some convoluted reason the artist had. I think he may have been hiding out under an assumed identity and the only way he could solve a mystery from his old life was hiring this girl to do a roundabout investigation of things. I think he had her following people.
