Naomi, what's the genre (which is we need to add to the topic header) - e.g., children's picture book or novel, teen fantasy?

Around what year did you read this book? A range of years is fine.

RabbitMilitia | 338 comments Naomi, I don't have an answer for you, but I think I may remember reading this and may be able to add another detail or two. Was the boy on his own? Did the boy end up staying with the woman? Did he comment that his face was "losing some of its foxiness" (AKA losing its sharpness) after he knew her for a while and was eating better, etc?

Is the book for kids, teens, or adults?

RabbitMilitia | 338 comments I read an excerpt from this in the mid 80s (probably around 1983-1986). It was in a school reader and was probably from a children's novel. I'm not 100% sure that the story I'm thinking of is the same as the one Naomi is thinking of, but I'm pretty sure an excerpt of Summer Birds by Penelope Farmer was in the same book. I thought it was one of the Wide Horizons books, but was searching for Summer Birds for YEARS and couldn't find it in any of the Wide Horizons, so I probably have that wrong, but it was likely a similar kind of reader (with large chunks of novels as "excerpts"). Naomi if this is completely different from the book you are searching for, please speak up- I don't want to take over your thread!

RabbitMilitia | 338 comments Again- not trying to take over Naomi's question- but if this is the same book/story- it is told in first person narration from the boy's view.
