ALSO I just remembered, I read it around 2017-18 and it seemed relatively new
How old is the girl in the story, teenager or younger child?
I’m not exactly sure... maybe around 14–16?
Do you know time setting? place setting? anything about the author? Thanks!
Idk about the author, I think the time was set in a fairytale-like era but I can’t pin it down exactly. The setting was split between a small house near the forest and the city, which was really polished and fancy but I think pretty urbanized.
Ok just remembered this oddly specific detail: the girl got the hat as a gift from her father (or she stole it I forget) and the hat was used specifically to prevent people from going insane in the forest. At one point I think she does lose the hat and go crazy but I’m not 100% on that one

The witch is the music teacher. The girl I think has a baby sibling who dies, and her family is shunned because of it. The witch I’m pretty sure has a bunch of cages, and maybe a flute? Also the girl is told by the lumberjack father to not go into the deep forest or she’ll go insane. I’m like 80% sure she has a read hat
