Maybe this is just a personal preference thing for me, too. I usually dislike reading books with a first person POV. And I really enjoyed The Rithmatist which is a YA book, but that one is not written in first person, so I don't think it's that I dislike his YA writing.

I don't mind first person POV usually, but it's kind of hard when the you don't care at all for that character the POV is written from.
Hate to keep writing negative things each section. The book is not horrible, but I was just expecting more from Sanderson.

It's definitely not up to his usual standard, but I enjoyed the ride.

Sky, you should try out The Rithmatist. I think you would like it if you like the way Sanderson builds a magic system. That's the strength of that book along with a pretty compelling mystery. Plus he characters aren't annoying!

Thanks, it's on my list! Some friends have read it and found the magic system fascinating like you say...Glad to know the characters wont be annoying :)

I think the story improved a lot in this section, but I do have trouble reconciling the writing in this series with that of his other stuff. Maybe he just can't write YA very well.
I think I liked Steelheart more than Rithmatist, but this less than either of those. The magic system is the best part of the Rithmatist. The story is pretty standard.
I guess we'll see how the last quarter of this goes. The stuff Megan shares about the Epics are interesting. I hope there is more of that to come.
