Christina Pilkington | 126 comments My favorite and least favorite parts of this section are the moments with Megan and David. For the most part I like their interaction. I like the new reveals we get here with learning Megan's weakness and David's continued plans to figure out if Epics can be saved. But sometimes the dialogue between David and Megan was cringe-worthy for me. Just embarrassing! Not impressed with the writing at all which is sad for me to say because I LOVED the Mistborn books - 5 star books for me- and I am so excited to read Sanderson's Stormlight archive.

Maybe this is just a personal preference thing for me, too. I usually dislike reading books with a first person POV. And I really enjoyed The Rithmatist which is a YA book, but that one is not written in first person, so I don't think it's that I dislike his YA writing.

Sky | 1291 comments I'm in the same boat - loved Mistborn and Stormlight Archive, not impressed with either Steelheart of Firefight. I haven't read Rithmatist, but the premise at least sounds more interesting to me.

I don't mind first person POV usually, but it's kind of hard when the you don't care at all for that character the POV is written from.

Hate to keep writing negative things each section. The book is not horrible, but I was just expecting more from Sanderson.

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments I think the fast-paced nature of this one has allowed me to overlook a lot of the things you guys are mentioning.

It's definitely not up to his usual standard, but I enjoyed the ride.

Sky, you should try out The Rithmatist. I think you would like it if you like the way Sanderson builds a magic system. That's the strength of that book along with a pretty compelling mystery. Plus he characters aren't annoying!

Thanks, it's on my list! Some friends have read it and found the magic system fascinating like you say...Glad to know the characters wont be annoying :)

Suzanne | 1582 comments I'm liking the world building the best in this book. I'm not super fond of the characters and their interactions - but it may be that I'm really not feeling in a YA mood. The fast pace is good too - and its kept me listening during my commutes.

I think the story improved a lot in this section, but I do have trouble reconciling the writing in this series with that of his other stuff. Maybe he just can't write YA very well.

I think I liked Steelheart more than Rithmatist, but this less than either of those. The magic system is the best part of the Rithmatist. The story is pretty standard.

I guess we'll see how the last quarter of this goes. The stuff Megan shares about the Epics are interesting. I hope there is more of that to come.
