Taking place in the 1920's, members of the Osage tribe, some spouses included, were murdered. The number of Osage members killed is specifically unknown, but the numbers were certainly in the scores if not hundreds. The FBI, or as it was originally called just Bureau of Investigation came to investigate these murders because it seemed as though every single local and state official was either in on the plots, receiving payments to keep quiet about them, or couldn't be bothered to expend the energy on the death of an Indian.
Grann's research into the murders is meticulous down to the smallest detail. His investigation is painstakingly documented. This is the reason for the 3 stars. In detailing the investigation Grann jumps from murder to murder involving dozens of characters with suspicious involvement in each instance. All the detail about the growth of the FBI caused the book to become tedious and difficult to follow.
