message 1: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments Looking for someone to read a book about a modern teenage girl who gets unexpectedly transported to 1800s London with a boy named Gideon. It sounds very interesting. The cover doesn’t really catch my eye but I hope someone will want to read it as well. Fantasy and romance.

message 2: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) Hey, Dalia! I'm interested in checking this out. I'm a sucker for fantasy romances that I don't immediately hate.

message 3: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments Cool! When would you want to start?

message 4: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) I can start anytime, really. How about tonight?

message 5: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I’m open to it. How much should we read at a time? Or should we just dive into it and see what happens?

message 6: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) I'm not sure, I've never done a buddy read before. I guess we can just dive in?

message 7: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments Each chapter is about 20 pages. How about we read up to chapter three and then discuss?

message 8: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) Sounds good! I'm having some trouble with my online library account right now, though, so I might have to start tomorrow.

message 9: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments Sounds great. Speaking of online library, do you use Libby? That’s what I use and it’s really good.

message 10: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) Yes, I love Libby! And it looks like I've set up a temporary account (I'll probably have to renew the original) so I can start reading.

message 11: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I think as long as you have a library card you can make an account. But I’m not sure

message 12: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) At my library your card can expire after several years, so I think that's the issue.

message 13: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments Ah that makes sense.

message 14: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) Okay, guess I'll start.

message 15: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I just started the book. I finished the prologue.

message 16: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) Same.

message 17: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I finished chapter three and it’s intriguing so far. I think it’s interesting how instead of using a time machine like most books, when they reach a certain age they just uncontrollably time travel to a random time.

message 18: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) I'm enjoying it. It's hard to get used to the character's voice, though. The writing style seems really old fashioned and posh for what's supposed to be a modern setting. It's jarring when she brings up TVs or cars. Maybe because it was translated from German?

message 19: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I think she does lead a very posh and old fashioned life style. I actually didn’t know it was originally German. That could definitely be why the writing has a different feel to it.

message 20: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) I like it, though. I've actually read ahead, so you can go ahead and start reading if you haven't yet.

message 21: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments Where are you in the book? I’ll probably read up to like chapter 6. Right now I’m on three

message 22: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I moved this topic to buddy reads in progress, it’s now called Ruby Red buddy read

message 23: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) I read up to chapter 9.

message 24: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) I've been an unfaithful book buddy.

message 25: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments Nah it’s fine. Last time I did a buddy read I accidentally read the whole book in one sitting. I actually really liked that book. It was called Before I Fall. It’s about a girl who relives the day of her death 7 times.

message 26: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I’ll read up to chapter nine

message 27: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) I've heard of that book. I think I've had my fill of dead mean girl redemption arcs though. So depressing.

message 28: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments Haha

message 29: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I just finished chapter 12. It’s really good so far. It’s pretty engrossing.

message 30: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I’m still deciding whether or not I like Gideon. I know I HATE the count for some glaringly obvious reasons

message 31: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) I haven't read to 12. I'll tell you right now that I hate Gideon. I can't stand rude love interests.

message 32: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments Gideon really isn’t so rude when you keep going. I think he was just being rude in the beginning because she likes Charlotte

message 33: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) I'm just not a fan of the whole "it's not like I like you or anything" trope Gwyneth has going on right now. She seems really passive and immature, but I guess she has room for development.

message 34: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I guess we’ll see

message 35: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) Well that book just kinda ended.

message 36: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments You finished it? Any thoughts?

message 37: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) Have you finished it? I don't want to spoil anything.

message 38: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I have about 60 pages left. I’ll probably finish today or tomorrow. So far much less time travel than I expected. Though to be fair, it is a trilogy.

message 39: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) The first book just felt like it was setting up the rest of the series, which is fine, except now I feel like it was a waste of time to read the first book.

message 40: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments Makes sense. I’m almost done with it.

message 41: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) Thoughts, comments, concerns?

message 42: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I enjoyed the writing style and the story was pretty good. I agree with your comment about this book setting up the other books. Recently I read a book called Shatter Me. I felt the same way, like the book should not be over yet. There was less time traveling in this book then I expected, which sounds weird but it’s true.

message 43: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) It felt like the ending was rushed and nothing really happened at all. And yeah, I really wanted more time traveling! The concept of randomly being teleported back in history was really exciting and I thought that's what the book was going for, but the author settled for an info dump instead. And there is no way Gwyneth is in love with Gideon already. I get that it's partially a romance novel, but that is ridiculous.

message 44: by Elena (new)

Elena Hi, so I don't want to sound like a busybody, but I saw this discussion and felt the need to coment lol. I read the books a while ago and really liked them. I just wanted to say that there are movies about the books, if you guys would like to see them, just to let you know lol. The last one is nothing like the book, but the first two are great in my opinion.

message 45: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 183 comments I didn’t know that, thank you!

message 46: by Elena (new)

Elena Dalia wrote: "I didn’t know that, thank you!"

You are welcome :)

message 47: by Allysia (new)

Allysia (vampirekiller) Thanks, Elena.
