May (theladymidnight) | 553 comments The first three chapters were eventful to say in the least. I wasn't expecting the conflict to occur so early in the book!

Yeah, I wasn't sure what to expect from the first few chapters but this definitely was NOT it! I assumed it would be the girl that she came to the party with. I can't even imagine seeing that.

Elysian (haeliks) | 255 comments hey guys. I wanna apologize, but I probably cannot partake in this buddy read. The ebook is still on hold in the library and I am not sure when exactly I can get it.

I wish you two happy reading tho!

Hopefully you get to read it soon! And thanks :)

May (theladymidnight) | 553 comments I'm a little behind with the reading since I was trying to finish another book. I hope to catch up today!

I just finished chapter 6 and I'm annoyed with how the cops are handling the situation! The questions they're asking Starr is mostly focused on discrediting her and finding faults in Khalil to justify what the cop did. I'm a little worried about how this investigaiton is going to play out.

I’m in the process of catching up, too! I’m running me a bath currently and have my book next to me...time to get this party started!

I’ll post again when I’m caught up :)

May (theladymidnight) | 553 comments I would be too scared to ruin my book if I read in the bath 😂 But it does sound relaxing!

I'm all caught up for today! And my thoughts so far:

The funeral scene was so sad! Especially the flashbacks of remembering what happened to Natasha.

I was shocked but not surprised when at the funeral they announced that the cop wasn't going to get arrested for killing Khalil. I had a feeling the investigation wasn't going to go well.

Also, reading about the protests that took place just reminded me of how things are in the US now. It's so weird how this book was written back in 2017 and now similar protests are happening.

I can’t believe that this book was so hyped but still no changes have been made. I can’t even imagine what Starr must be going through...I mean, she’s 16 and lost two of her closest friends when they both weren’t doing anything wrong. It breaks my heart. I can’t believe I have such a strong affinity for her character already.

May (theladymidnight) | 553 comments Me too. I'm feeling some of the emotions Starr is feeling as I'm reading this book. Today's chapters were so sad! I can't believe some people at her school are protesting just to get out of class! And the scene outside of her father's store was frightening. I can't imagine how it must be to witness a family member being treated badly by the police.

I'm glad that Starr is starting to realize that she should speak up about what happened!

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I can’t believe they would do that but at the same time I can. A lot of high school students hate being in class so much that they would use any excuse to get out. We had it happen a few times at our high school.

I’m loving this book a lot more than I though I would!

May (theladymidnight) | 553 comments Lol true, some students would do anything to avoid class. I remember some people in my high school would skip class to go out and eat.

I finished today's chapters and what the cop's dad said on the interview was ridiculous. At least the response to the interview was disbelief. It's unlikely a cop would be afraid of two kids. Also, Starr's friend Hailey really annoyed me in the past chapters. I can't believe the offensive comments she would say. And I'm glad that Starr's dad finally agrees to moving out of their current neighborhood! It's not safe for their family anymore, especially since people know she was the witness.

Hailey definitely annoyed me, too! She’s being so judgemental and harsh towards Starr and for what? Like, a friend is supposed to love you unconditionally but it seems like she just doesn’t care. Its sad to think about because Starr needs nothing more than support from her friends through this whole thing! It breaks my heart. :(

May (theladymidnight) | 553 comments Starr's interview was mind blowing! I'm proud of her for speaking up and when she said the phrase "I'd ask him if he wished he shot me too" I found that to be very powerful. I am curious about the cop's reaction to what she said.

Also, I'm so glad Chris ended up being a great guy! Their conversation at prom showed how much he truly cares about her.

May (theladymidnight) | 553 comments I just read these chapters and Hailey was even more annoying! I can't believe the stuff she said and how she demands an apology, rather than accepting what she said was offensive!! Also, I'm so scared about the decision. I'm worried that even after Starr testifying, the grand jury won't come to the right decision.

I'm tempted to finish reading this book today just to know what the decision is!

May (theladymidnight) | 553 comments I just finished it and I really enjoyed this book! (view spoiler)

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey sorry I’m like a day behind...I haven’t had an off day from work and it’s really taking a toll on me and my reading! I spent hours last night catching up on my buddy reads! I’m still highly enjoying the book! I’m glad you finished and liked it!

May (theladymidnight) | 553 comments That's alright! Take your time :)

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I finally finished it! Having no off days is really throwing me for a loop lol. I loved this book so much. I think that it is EXTREMELY important to read with what is going on in the world today. Even though this book was written about three years ago, it is still relevant and that is more terrifying than anything.
