I think Rene is really only concerned about himself. I can imagine he was haunted by his experience with Eve because it challenged his idea of himself. So maybe he thought of her, but I would expect in a bad way.
I found the last meeting quite satisfying. It was therapeutic for me to read about a monstrous person having to pay for his abuses. It doesn’t always happen in reality, but I liked imagining it could happen.
Only in terms of how he had “bested” her, or made him think she had. I’m guessing he had some level of satisfaction in that he not only lived but prospered exactly how he imagined he would.
I was a little on the fence about the last meeting. I would have been more satisfied if he had been revealed to the world as the collaborator and murderer he was. Death seemed too easy.
I like to think that he was taunted by her over the years. That he started to second-guess his instincts on a lot of things after he discovered Eve had duped him, and every niggling doubt after that became a reminder of her. Even though he probably lived quite well on the outside, I suspect he experienced some paranoia after Eve.
I agree with Lyn, I would have been more satisfied seeing him really pay for his behaviors versus death. Seemed too easy. I also think it would have been better justice for Eve and the others if he had been exposed. I think the author did a good job of helping you see that he was tormented by Eve throughout his life by the comments made/references to his reactions when Eve mentioning that she had coned him for months.
