Welp, so much for me maybe getting this one right. 😴

Pamela | 2209 comments Hint: The editor told the author their writing was "terrible and they would never amount to anything, so they might as well forget their dream of writing and pursue a career they were better suited to."

Great idea! But, sadly, no. 😶

Joanna Hmmm, well I know that James Russell Lowell was the first editor of the Atlantic. Pretty sure his successor was J. T. Fields. That still doesn't get me very far though. 😂

Joanna Well actually I didn't know about her until we moved to Maine and I found some of her books in the library. I don't think she is that well-known anymore.

Pamela | 2209 comments You have lived many places, Meg! I have lived on the same property for 58 years! Since I was brought home from the hospital when I was born! Did you live in Virginia very long? It's one of my favorite states. Lots of history!🏡

Another hint...the author lived briefly with their cousin and her husband, editor of Atlantic Monthly.

It's been nice living here forever, but now that my health is failing my mom and I may have to move to a smaller place (3 acres is too much for me to handle). It would be easier to leave here if we were not so deeply rooted. I've been praying a lot about it. My neighbors help so much, but I don't like living like this after years of being able to handle things on my own. It's been a hard adjustment for me, losing a lot of my independence.

Oh wow, I envy people who have lived in one place all their lives (provided of course that one likes where one lives!😄). We lived in VA 4 years (actually the longest my sister and I lived anywhere until we moved to Maine!). I wish I had been old enough to appreciate the history more.

Pamela | 2209 comments One last hint. I hope this helps. The author volunteered during The Civil War, serving in Washington D.C. for a brief time during the conflict.
🤔
Can anyone guess now?

This would have been easy if Dorry had been here! 😄 So was it James Russell Lowell who told her she couldn't write?

message 4649: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments It was James T. Fields, who was married to Louisa's cousin, Anne Adams. Louisa lived with her cousin and Fields for a short time. Fields actually gave Louisa money to start a school as he was so strongly convinced she had no talent for writing. How very wrong he was!
