Joanna Recap..."Which NEL author rode on a train with Dickens?"

Hannah - Hawthorne or Twain
Emma - Edith Wharton
Ruth - Longfellow
Dorry - hasn't guessed yet but will probably say Alcott

Who else are we missing? I know Allyson is AWOL...

Pamela | 2209 comments I haven't been online much today. Several visitors dropped in while I was reading on the porch. A nice way to spend the day after yesterday's anxiety.

Pamela | 2209 comments Ah, I just read the quiz question. My answer is Kate Wiggin (Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm). She was not yet a famous author, as she was only 12 years old at the time. It was Dickens' 2nd visit to America. Kate later published her story of the meeting as "A Child's Journey With Dickens."

Lily Rose Dorothea | 1454 comments I'm going to surprise everyone and go with Pamela. Kate Douglas Wiggin.

I just read a reprint of the book a few years ago. It was short. I think less than 50 pages, but it was interesting.

Pamela | 2209 comments Here's my question for the next quiz:

Nathaniel Hawthorne helped start a Transcendental Commune near Boston, but left the commune a few months later. Why did he leave?

The laborious experiment impeded

He came to his senses

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments Possible answers for Pammy:πŸ˜‹
1. The commune didn't suit Hawthorne-
their ideals nor the environment.
2. He was more of a laborer than a member.
3. It wasn't the place to start his new life
with Sophia, his betrothed nor could it
support them.
4. It was a failing investment.
5. He was concerned that Sophia would
get involved in mesmerism.
6. Was uninspired to write.
7. He was sick of the dung heap.
8. His life there was unnatural and unsuitable, and therefore an unreal, one. could never associate with the community.
9. Could tolerate the winter there.

If your answer isn't here, then ask Meg.

Ruth is closer than anyone else with her answer. It was the hard labor, but I was looking for the exact reason, which was that he got serious blisters on his hands and could not write. The blisters came from cutting straw and shoveling manure. When he realized the damage to his hands was severe, he left.

So, I declare Ruth the winner!
