Ah, I just read the quiz question. My answer is Kate Wiggin (Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm). She was not yet a famous author, as she was only 12 years old at the time. It was Dickens' 2nd visit to America. Kate later published her story of the meeting as "A Child's Journey With Dickens."Pammy Jo

Ruth is closer than anyone else with her answer. It was the hard labor, but I was looking for the exact reason, which was that he got serious blisters on his hands and could not write. The blisters came from cutting straw and shoveling manure. When he realized the damage to his hands was severe, he left.
