Joanna Does anyone have any more guesses? I really thought Ruth would know this one! 😄

message 3459: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Alane | 662 comments He was counting rings on a tree stump!

Hannah Alane | 662 comments Finally had to look on Wikipedia. So if my answer gets excluded for "cheating" that's fine. It was just driving me insane to know the answer.

Not that Wikipedia is always correct. I thought I'd found the correct answer on Britannica Encyclopedia this morning BUT OBVIOUSLY NOT!!!

message 3461: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments Anhh! I think I know the answer. I'll hold out a bit longer to see if anybody else figures it out. It has something to do with being outside. I think? You have really given us a tough one this time, Meg! A good one, though!

Pamela | 2209 comments Uh oh...Hannah's answer makes me think I am wrong. I was going to say he was surveying land, but now I don't think I am right!

Joanna Thoreau had suffered periodically from tuberculosis since his college days. In 1860, he caught bronchitis from counting tree rings in either a rainstorm or snowstorm (accounts differ). His health declined and he died in 1862.

Lily Rose Dorothea | 1454 comments Hannah, do you want to ask an easy question?

Dorry has spoken so you better do it... 🤣🤣🤣
(For my sake as well...)

message 3473: by Ruth (new)

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments I recall Thoreau counting tree rings,
I just didn't know it was after a
rain/snow storm. He get up around
three in the morning and walk for miles,
hence my guess.

That's a logical guess, Ruth! One article I read said he was counting rings at night in a rainstorm, but I would think that would be pretty hard!

Hannah Alane | 662 comments This may be a deep question but here goes -

What happens in chapter 9 of Huckleberry Finn to symbolize Noah's flood?

I just learned this today from taking that online Twain course from Hillsdale College.

Emma | meadowroselibrary Hannah wrote: "This may be a deep question but here goes -

Yep, great question Hansie, but I'll be sitting this one out. I hate to admit it, but I've never read any Mark Twain. 🤐

message 3480: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Would it be cheating to read chapter 9? I think I've read Huckleberry Finn twice but it's been a while! 😅

message 3481: by Lily Rose (new)

Lily Rose Dorothea | 1454 comments I agree with Meggy, and I don't think it would be cheating, so I'm going to do it!

message 3482: by Lily Rose (new)

message 3485: by Allyson (new)

Allyson Jamison | 170 comments BTW, I cannot believe you got the last question right Hansie!! When I read that I was like that's so good, why didn't I come up with that?! And then Meg was like and the winner is Hannah.😮 Here I thought you were being sarcastic!!

message 3486: by Ruth (new)

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments A very good question, Hannah.
I have to go back in time to
find the answer- it's been that long.

message 3487: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Alane | 662 comments This question was made for research! Go dig into chp. 9 and tell me what you find! What reminds you of the Noah story?

message 3488: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Sarah, I enjoy Mark Twain's humor but otherwise don't take him too seriously (he made fun of one of my favorite authors so now I really have a bone to pick with him! 😅). I don't know a whole lot about him besides what I've gathered from his writings but I did get the impression that he wasn't religious. Hannah has been taking a free course about him from Hilldale College and I'm planning to do the same soon. It sounds really interesting and I'm hoping it covers some of his beliefs!

message 3489: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Sarah wrote: "Again, I'm very neutral (I might have come across as a person who hates Mark Twain but again I've only read two of his book "Huckberry Fin" and "Tom Sawyer") so again not someone I typically debate..."

Yes, that makes sense, Sarah! Personally I have no problem with reading a book by an author with a different view point as long as I know where my own faith stands and there is nothing immoral in the work (there are a couple of Twain stories that I'm pretty leery of reading, judging by the titles though).

Hi Sarah,
You make an interesting point.
It is good to question things, to question
God, because it leads to understanding-
just as a child does when they see a world
they don't understand, they need to know
why. This is how we learn in our personal
growth, even God instructs us- he who lacks
wisdom, let him ask. Asking leads knowing,
personal knowledge of Him.
On the other hand, to question as in to doubt
and blame leads to cynicism, which is another
form of mockery and contempt.
Mark Twain may have attended church and knew
about God, but he spoke of what he believed,
ergo a cynic.

message 3492: by Allyson (new)

Allyson Jamison | 170 comments I think (though I'm not positive on this) that Mark Twain was religious (or at least somewhat religious) for the majority of his life until his twenty seven year old daughter died and then I think his wife died from depression, he really sunk into depression after that and turned his back on God.

Which daughter?
He was close to his oldest.

message 3494: by Allyson (new)

Allyson Jamison | 170 comments I don't know, Ruth.🤷

Emma | meadowroselibrary Hannah, are you going to announce the answer?

message 3496: by Allyson (new)

Allyson Jamison | 170 comments Just looked it up, I guess I meant twenty four, not twenty seven, it was Susy. She was the oldest daughter and, yes, he was very close to her.
