It said before he caught his last illness (Tuberculosis it is speculated) he was already in poor health. What may have been the death blow was when he heard his father figure of an abolitionist - John Brown - had been hanged. This sent Thoreau into a shock. The website says it was a psychic shock - whatever that is.
