Allyson Jamison | 170 comments Hannah, I'm going to hit it with you. Night all! Sorry Meg, after I asked that I realized that the illness most likely has absolutely nothing to do with the answer. So I guess probably never mind.

Pamela, Hannah and I were up late
discussing Civil War history.
That's why Meg and I started the
N.E.L. History Channel for historical
chats.

message 3379: by Joanna (last edited Jul 28, 2020 04:31AM) (new)

Joanna Time for a recap? Question: What was Thoreau doing when he caught his last illness?

Emma - Writing Walden
Ruth - ???
Dorry - Play his flute on North River 🤦🏻‍♀️
Hannah - Doing research...
Allyson - Walking to Hawthorne's house in the rain or playing in the snow.
Pamela - Walking through the Maine woods
Doreen - MIA

Who else are we missing? The other Emma and Sara...would you like to guess? 😊

message 3380: by Lily Rose (new)

Lily Rose Dorothea | 1454 comments Meg, you make it sound like Hannah's guess is that Thoreau was doing research when he caught his last illness!

I just thought of THE answer, Meg!

Before Thoreau caught his last illness.....He was leaving his doctor's office after just being told he was in perfect health!

; ) Just starting the day with a wisecrack answer!

Pammy Jo

Emma | meadowroselibrary You all say it as if it was one she just now made up! I bet she's right!! 😅

message 3387: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Alane | 662 comments Okay, so I don't REALLY know if this answers your question or not, but this is what I found on Britannica Encyclopedia, and found it rather interesting:

It said before he caught his last illness (Tuberculosis it is speculated) he was already in poor health. What may have been the death blow was when he heard his father figure of an abolitionist - John Brown - had been hanged. This sent Thoreau into a shock. The website says it was a psychic shock - whatever that is.
