Mercury was thought to be a miracle cure...a miracle, indeed. It did it's damage and destroyed the body slowly over time.

In all fairness, I used to do Civil War reenactments and portrayed a nurse. I did much research about Civil War era medicine and that's how I discovered Louisa May Alcott suffered from mercury poisoning.

At first when I started reading your question, I thought your question was a word problem like back in school..."In an hour I'm going to be out for a couple of hours" ...seemed like the start to a word puzzle to me, but then I realized it wasn't.
