I am holding out for Allyson. Oh dear! Nobody has it yet! Some of you are in the general vicinity of the answer, though. Whatever shall I do! I'm afraid I'm going to be banned for life from asking quiz questions!

Should I give a hint?

Allyson Jamison | 170 comments You are all wrong. Shortly after she returned home from Washington D. C. her father died causing her family much sadness and heartache. Her health was weakened by the sad state of her life and the wont for desire to rise from the tragedy.

message 3121: by Ruth (new)

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments I don't think it's opium.
Maybe morphine or mercury.
Mercury was added to a lot of products,
(i.e. mad as a hatter)
I'm thinking perhaps mercury.

Pamela | 2209 comments Good News/Bad News/Good News

Good: I finally saw the comet!!! It appeared to have 2 tails!

Bad: Nobody has the correct answer.

Good: I am giving you a hint~It was a treatment commonly used during the Civil War period, with often deadly effects as time wore on.

The first to answer correctly wins!

I feel so bad for posting difficult questions! How can I redeem myself??? Please do not impeach me from the group...at least not before I have a fair trial! : )

While I was typing my Good News/Bad News post, Ruth came up with the correct answer! Sorry, Meg! Ruth beat you to it!

Mercury was thought to be a miracle cure...a miracle, indeed. It did it's damage and destroyed the body slowly over time.

Congratulations Ruth!!!!!!!

Calomel was another word for mercury, so you answered correctly...TWICE!!

message 3133: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments In all fairness, I used to do Civil War reenactments and portrayed a nurse. I did much research about Civil War era medicine and that's how I discovered Louisa May Alcott suffered from mercury poisoning.

Me?! Well I would if you're too busy, but actually we are having company today so I may not be back until late this afternoon or evening sometime. I don't have a question formulated at the moment. 😏

message 3143: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Hey, if Ruth and I are both absent and you all get bored...maybe Emma could ask something. I'm pretty sure she's had a stumper up her sleeve for a while now. 😂

If you aren't able I'd be glad to help out! 😏
Just keep in mind I'm horrible at these!!

Emma | meadowroselibrary Okay I've got one!!!

Emma | meadowroselibrary Okay here we go! In an hour I'm going to be out for a couple hours, so I'll let those who are still here mull over this one. Though I bet as soon Pam sees it she'll know!! 😅😉

Who wrote close to eighteen hundred poems during their relatively short lifetime. And how old were they when this person died?

I do know, but will wait for others to guess. I just had a chance yesterday! Good one, Emma! At first when I started reading your question, I thought your question was a word problem like back in school..."In an hour I'm going to be out for a couple of hours" ...seemed like the start to a word puzzle to me, but then I realized it wasn't. It's just me and my muddled way of thinking!!! I'm positive it's the heat causing my recent brain fog! LOL!!!

Joanna I agree with Hannah, probably Emily Dickinson! And if so, she died when she was 56, I believe?
