Hannah Alane | 662 comments Okey dokey, here we go:

Which collection of stories did Indiana author Johnny Gruelle write as a memorial to friend and poet James Whitcomb Riley and daughter Marcella?

Emma | meadowroselibrary *thinking*......

*thinking*......

Emma | meadowroselibrary To be honest, I've never heard of Johnny Gruelle. XD

message 109: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Alane | 662 comments Oh dear me.... XD

message 110: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Alane | 662 comments To be fair, this is a bit of a trick question. Riley originally wrote this work as a poem but Gruelle took the character and created a collection of short stories from it instead.

Not too hard!
I don't think I'm in the same planet.

message 112: by Joanna (new)

Joanna I'm not very familiar with Johnny Gruelle either, although I had a Raggedy Ann doll when I was little! 😀

IS it the Raggedy Ann series? I just noticed that one of them is called 'Marcella: A Raggedy Ann Story. 🤔

message 113: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Alane | 662 comments Super duper close, Meg!

message 114: by Hannah (last edited Jun 24, 2020 10:44AM) (new)

Hannah Alane | 662 comments This collection was published 5 years after the death of Riley and Marcella.

message 115: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Alane | 662 comments Perhaps I should have added more details to my question? Because Marcella: A Raggedy Ann Story is a really good guess.

Well you don't want to make it too easy for us... 😂
Ok, will think about this a little more!

Emma | meadowroselibrary TONIGHT?!?!? XD

Hannah Alane | 662 comments Monitor Meg, how long do you think I should keep the question up before answering?

message 120: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Ok, I've been reading up on Johnny Gruelle and James Whitcomb Riley! 😀 If I understand it all correctly, Gruelle took the name for the Raggedy Ann character from Riley's poems 'Little Orphan Annie' and 'The Raggedy Man'.

I think our posts just crossed! 😂

message 122: by Hannah (last edited Jun 24, 2020 04:23PM) (new)

Hannah Alane | 662 comments Hahaha Meg, you win the prize! The answer is:

Orphant Annie Storybook by Johnny Gruelle Orphant Annie!

The introduction to this book states that is was written and illustrated by Gruelle, the creator of Raggedy Ann, as a tribute and memorial to his dear friend and neighbor James Whitcomb Riley and to his own beloved daughter Marcella, both of whom died in 1916.

Riley first came up with the character in his poem Little Orphant Annie but - after doing more research on Wikipedia etc. - Gruelle took Annie and created his own stories.

And you're correct that Gruelle took his inspiration for Raggedy Ann from Riley's Raggedy Man as well.

message 123: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Alane | 662 comments I love looking through all the original, old illustrations through these books. Such talent Gruelle had!

Joanna Dorothy wrote: "Whoops! He wasn't from Maine... my mistake. I should have just said New England."

Aha!!!! No wonder I was stumped! 😂 Mystery solved...after graduating from Harvard, Ralph Waldo Emerson assisted his brother William in a school for young women.

That's a good guess Hannah! Bronson Alcott did teach school for a while although it wasn't exclusively for girls.
