This author, the youngest of 12 children, did not attend school until the age of 11. Instead, she played on the farm and studied the natural world first hand. She dropped out of high school to care for her sister, dying of cancer.
Her books included novels, picture books, and naturalist books. She wasn’t a trained scientist. In fact, she didn’t graduate from high school. She taught herself to write, study nature, and take photos.

I'll give a hint...She was born in Indiana, died in California. Multiple books of hers were set in Indiana.
