Pamela | 2209 comments If you have time, Google "The love story of Ulysses and Julia Grant." It's a very sweet story.

Pamela | 2209 comments My quiz question:

This famous New Englander closed a letter they wrote on November 1, 1800 with these words:

"Before I end my letter, I pray Heaven to bestow the best of Blessings on this House and all that shall hereafter inhabit it."

Name the author of the letter, the name of the house being written about, and the name of the person to whom the letter was written.

Pammy Jo

*I know, I am asking for a 3-part answer. You know how I love to do that! Blame it on my teaching background!

It really is. The story of Julia suffering from an eye condition, causing her to be badly cross-eyed is especially touching. When a surgeon in Philadelphia perfected a surgery to correct the condition, Julia packed her bags and was ready to depart for Philadelphia. Grant had just been elected President. Julia wanted to improved her appearance as First Lady, so arranged for the surgery. Grant told her he found her beautiful and that those eyes were the ones he looked into when he fell in love with her. He did not want her to have the surgery. Julia unpacked her bags and never again thought of correcting her eyes.

Also, while Ulysses and Julia were courting, her pet canary died. Grant had 6 of his fellow army friends serve as pallbearers for the bird's funeral and they gave Julia's beloved canary a full military burial. I always thought that was such a loving gesture. Very endearing for a Yankee (so says this Rebel at heart).😊

Pamela | 2209 comments A hint about my quiz question...The person in question is not one who is a typical New England author. I chose the question in keeping with current events. If only each of the future residents of that house would remember that it truly is a blessing to be a resident...AND act accordingly!😉

John Adams is correct. The White House is correct. Thomas Jefferson is NOT correct. Think a close family member.

Pamela | 2209 comments Meg wrote: "His wife Abigail?"

Yes! You are correct, Meg! I know this wasn't the ideal N.E.L. quiz question, but I thought it was a good point, in light of the current political climate. So many officials have moved so far from the intent of our Founding Fathers. 😢😪

CONGRATULATIONS MEG!!!

Thank, Pammy Jo! It was a very good question! Some of us are actually reading 'The Education of Henry Adams', right now, so it was quite appropriate. 🤗 And I completely agree with you...I've been noticing lately that practically everything the Founding Fathers said sounds like a direct attack on our government now! No wonder they are in such a hurry to undermine them as racists and bigots! 😠

I completely agree! We are living in very troubling times. It's so sad. This is not what the Founding Fathers wanted for our nation. The ones in power today would like to erase Washinton and Jefferson from the record. It makes my blood boil. As Winston Churchill said..."A nation that forgets it's past has no future." How very frightening! All we can do is pray to God that He will lead us through and protect us! Our current "leaders" are surely no longer respectful of that!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

I'm okay. Still dealing with the shingles virus. Thanks to Werner's wife Barb's suggestion over on Prayer Requests, I've been using honey on the blisters and it has relieved the pain.🙏 How is your dog? Is the pancreatitis any better? I've been praying about it. When my kitties are sick, it makes me sick, so I understand how upsetting it must be.

Yes, I've been reading those comments and am SO glad to hear it's doing better! 🙏🤗 I still continually pray for you and always hope you're doing well! 💕 My dog is doing much better, pretty sure her pancreatitis is gone. We still keep an eye on her, but she's doing very well! We were very worried about her, so I'm so glad she's okay!

It's 14 below this morning! Probably the coldest we've had all winter, which isn't very impressive. 😆 Hopefully the snow will miss you! We don't have any snow in the forecast except for a few showers tomorrow. This is a very strange winter but I'm not complaining! 😁
