Name the author who briefly fought in the Confederate Army, but who later became friends with Ulysses S. Grant and rescued Grant's widow from poverty after Grant's death.

πŸ˜‚ The first person who pops into my mind is Mark Twain, but that's probably not right.

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments I agree, it has to be Mark Twain.
Being friends, Grant had asked
Twain to write his memoirs.

message 13564: by Pamela (last edited Dec 06, 2020 02:12AM) (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments Meg answered correctly first! It is Mark Twain! Twain helped Grant write his memoirs because Grant was dying when he wrote them. Twain made a deal with the publisher, refusing to receive royalties from the publication of the volumes, even though he was entitled to the money. Instead, Twain wanted all of the money to go to Grant's wife, Julia. It did. Julia earned over $450,000 for the sale of the books. Grant made many bad financial investments in his last years. Had Twain accepted the money for the memoirs instead of giving it to Julia, Julia would have lived the rest of her life in poverty. Thanks to Twain, Julia Grant became one of the wealthiest women in the United States. Meanwhile, Twain struggled financially for the rest of his life. In the 19th Century, $450,000 was the equivalent of millions of dollars today!

Pamela | 2209 comments Well, I think my brain is finally cooked. I fell asleep on the sofa over at my mom's house last night. She woke me up and said that I was singing Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were" in my sleep, apparently in it's entirety. My mom said I was drowning out the TV, which apparently annoyed her, thus she woke me. The oddest thing is that I have never liked Streisand or that song!

It is odd. I don't remember any dreams. Perhaps my subconscious was wishing for the days before Frick and Frack, thus..."The Way We Were" must have seemed appropriate in my mind! It was quite strange!

I am not sure who said it, but I strongly disagree! If we had no winter, we would not be stiff and achy from shoveling. Of course, when spring and summer arrive, there is all that mowing...in the fall there is all that raking...see, I told you I do not like any of the seasons! LOL!!!πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ˜ƒ
