The author's mother's maiden name was Gansevoort. It was her married name that she changed. It is believed that she changed her married name after her husband died in order to hide her identity from debt collectors. Her husband (the author's father) was bankrupt before his death. He died when the author was young, causing the author to quit school and get a job in order to earn money for the family.

As a child, the author contracted Scarlet Fever which left the author with permanently weakened eyesight.
I enjoy giving hints. It's a good learning experience! I'll think of more hints, if needed.

You beat me to it, Pammy Jo! It finally dawned on me that I thought it was Melville I'd read that about, but wasn't able to get on here til now.

No problem. I just wasn't sure I'd be able to get back online today, so posted the answer. More local issues that require my attention. I would SO love to go into hibernation and hole up with just my cats. So tired of everybody else's drama becoming my problem. I'm so tempted to hang a sign on my door saying "Pamela doesn't live here anymore!" LOL!!! Can a grownup run away?π€
