Pamela | 2209 comments William Cullen Bryant wrote a poem called " Consumption" about the disease, but I don't know that his family was prone to the illness.🤔

Emma | meadowroselibrary Sorry, Dorry, but you aren't right...😏

Lily Rose Dorothea | 1454 comments Neither one?!?!?!

message 12356: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments I know this is not related to New England Literature, but it's interesting to note that all of the Bronte sisters died of consumption, in addition to a number of their family members.

Emma | meadowroselibrary Dorothy wrote: "Neither one?!?!?!"

Sowwy.

I remember everything! Recently I saw a car at the library that looked very familiar. I was sure it belonged to a nice lady that used to work there. A couple hours later we went in for something and the car was still there. When we went in, she was working there again! I thought about telling her that I saw her car outside, but thought that might freak her out! LOL!

Pamela | 2209 comments I must conduct a mouse hunt. My cat is telling me there is a mouse in the house. It no doubt came in because of being disturbed by all of the leaf blowing and raking. Yuk!🧀🐀🐈😳

Lily Rose Dorothea | 1454 comments You have to hunt for the mouse?! I thought that was a cat's job!

Hi Pammy,
That as tragic the four Brontë were wiped out
by the disease. Reading Shirley the atmosphere of
the book is somber- the poor woman losing her
three siblings in one year, whilst writing this book.
I have a great appreciation for the novel that cost
her so much

Pamela | 2209 comments I have always enjoyed the Bronte sisters. Back before I got sick and stopped working, I used to read their books with another teacher at my school. We loved to compare notes and discuss the books on our lunch break each day. How I miss teaching. I'm fortunate to still see my former colleagues regularly. Even during this time of social distancing, we meet at the nearby park and walk the 4-mile trail several times per week. I enjoy it so much and am thankful I'm still able to participate.

It normally would be, but I don't allow my cats to be "mousers"...too many germs. I set traps where the cats can't reach them. Dealing with the remains of those traps has always bothered me, so now I set them inside paper lunch bags. When I hear them snap, I simply roll up the bag and throw the whole thing away. Thankfully, I don't need them very often, usually just when the weather gets cold. Not often then, really. I used to chase the mice myself and catch them in coffee cans, then release them in the field. That ended when I released one and instead of running away, the critter ran up my sleeve and got into my shirt. That ended my sympathetic feelings for mice!😝

I'm so glad you still see your former colleagues.
I can tell how much you miss teaching,
you had a great time and career as a teacher.
What grades did you teach?

I taught Kindergarten in a private school. We were not required to use the Common Core Curriculum Standards mandated by PA public schools. I strongly disagree with Common Core education. It is much like herding cattle, in my opinion, and is not creative. It's all about standardized testing and rote memorization. Language Arts is basically nonexistent in Common Core Curriculum. My private school encouraged creativity and I was fortunate to be able to implement my own curriculum and create lesson plans which were diverse. The children were well rounded and went on to excel in later years. Personally, I am a product of the Pa Public School System, but attended before the new standards were in place. Even so, I disagree with much about public education, especially today.

As far as the Bronte sisters, my favorites are "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" and "Agnes Grey" by Anne, and of course, "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte, and "Wuthering Heights" by Emily. I was already reading the Bronte sisters, Jane Austen, Alcott and others when I was in elementary school. I loved reading, even then! I was fortunate to have a family who encouraged my interest in books.

I miss all of you, too! I left several other groups when I received notice that I had some creepy followers, but I couldn't leave all of you. I guess I acted too hastily, as I have had no more unacceptable followers since I set my profile to Private. I miss those groups, but I was very upset at the time. Oh well, too late now.

I'll think of a question and post it soon.

Pamela | 2209 comments Okay, here's my quiz question...

This New England author was a staunch abolitionist, novelist and poet. They are best known for writing a poem, eventually set to music, which became a beloved holiday classic and remained popular for generations.

Name the author and the poem.
