Is it evaporated milk that can be turned into caramel or dulce de leche? Cause that sounds really good to put into coffee! Ruth, you have my little grey cells turning!

HAHAHA, can you imagine what Hawthorne and Twain would think if someone actually said their writings were similar!?! The mental picture that's coming into my mind!!!!

That is sweetened condensed milk,
which is also used in coffee, such
as Vietnamese coffee.

Agreed!
You share your dad's coffee, does he
take a thermos on road trips?
What is a road trip without coffee?!

I actually did a search recently out of curiosity to see if Mark Twain made any comments on Hawthorne. The only thing I could really find was someone asking why Twain scholars all need to disparage Hawthorne's contribution to American literature!

Hannah Alane | 662 comments *gasp* How dare they!?!

No, he just gets it at convenience stores along the way. It is a necessity for him, especially since these long trips usually entail driving 18-20 hours straight!

My sentiments exactly! And someone else called Twain the father of American literature. Umm, no!!

Not really, a friend of mine
introduced me to Vietnamese
coffee. I prefer the classic coffee,
American & European-
cafe au lait, cappuccino, espresso
Sometimes a latte.

That statement had to have been
made by a mediocre person.
I have read Twain's work,
there isn't depth to his writing
adventures, yes, but it cannot
be placed above the fireside author.
That kind of depth requires insight,
which Twain lacks. Twain had to
have known he was not the same
caliber of the author, otherwise why
would he be so disagreeable in
disparaging the great works of
others?

It depends on my mood.
If I wish to treat myself- cappuccino
or espresso, cold weather comfort- latte.
Generally, I have classic coffee with
evaporate milk or cafe au lait.

I can hear Doreen now,
"It's only coffee!"

message 1198: by Ruth (new)

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments Before being convinced to write Little Women, Alcott wrote what were referred to as “Blood and Thunder Tales.” These stories were a far cry from the sentimental world of Marmy’s cottage. Instead, these books were gothic thrillers with sensational titles such as “Pauline’s Passion and Punishment” and “A Long Fatal Love Chase.” A savvy writer, Alcott chose to publish these chilling stories about abusive husbands and insane asylums under a pseudonym: A.M. Barnard.

Oh that's funny!! Ironically, in Little Women, she warns against writing such "thrillers" saying they were empty stories and useless. Wonder what changed?

She was probably deterring girls from reading such dark
books.
