Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments Today's❓❓❓quiz❓❓❓ game

This accomplished man and N.E.L. author had
a maternal grandmother came from a
Puritan family that was among the first Pilgrims
to flee to Massachusetts for religious freedom
and her father was "the sort of rebel destined
to transform colonial America."
Who is the author?
(Clue: think outside of the fireside authors box)

Pamela | 2209 comments Benjamin Franklin

message 10925: by Pamela (last edited Oct 22, 2020 08:36AM) (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments The way the question is worded, I think you are looking for a man, but then you said "HER father" which confused me. The grandmother is Mary Morrell Folger and her husband was Peter Folger. I still think it's Benjamin Franklin you are looking for as the answer, though. Benjamin Franklin's father was Josiah Franklin and his mother was Abiah Lee (Folger) Franklin. Benjamin Franklin is one of my favorites and I have admired him since I was a child. I feel so fortunate to live so near Philadelphia and the many sites related to Franklin.

message 10926: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments Interesting to note that Mary Morrell came to the Colonies as an indentured servant. Peter Folger was on the same ship as Mary. He was sailing with his parents. Peter paid 20 pounds to pay off Mary's servitude, as he fell deeply in love with Mary. After they married, Peter and Mary moved to Martha's Vineyard, where Peter became a teacher and a translator for the Wampanoag people. I always thought that Peter and Mary's story was quite romantic. Benjamin Franklin, on the other hand, had quite a reputation for being unfaithful. He did not take after his grandfather, who was a devoted husband, according to everything I have read about him. Nevertheless, I still admire Franklin's brilliance.

That's really interesting, Pammy Jo!

message 10928: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments After rereading the question several times, I am still not sure why the question is about "this accomplished 👨man" and yet later in the question it says "her👧father was the sort of rebel destined to transform Colonial America." If it is Benjamin Franklin, it should say "his father was the sort of rebel..." I'm sticking with Benjamin Franklin as my answer, but I really am confused by the wording of the question.🤔🧐🤔🧐🤔🤷‍♀️

Another interesting bit of info is that most often writers spell Mary's maiden name as Morrell, yet her tombstone has her name written as Mary Morrill Folger. As they say in PA Dutch Country...that has often "wondered" me! 😁😂🤣😅😆
Pammy Jo

message 10931: by Pamela (last edited Oct 22, 2020 11:05AM) (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments More of interest...Mary Morrell Folger is mentioned by name in chapter 24 of "Moby Dick" as being an ancestor of the Folger Whalers. She is also the 5th great grandmother of James Folger who founded the Folger Coffee company.

After remembering and sharing all of this information, what if I am wrong and the answer is not Benjamin Franklin at all??!!😳😮☺

message 10933: by Ruth (new)

Ruth (misselizabethbennett) | 2502 comments Congratulation, Pammy!
Benjamin Franklin is the correct answer.

"Her" (Benjamim's grandmother/Mary's), of course.

"Accomplished" describes a man who,
as a boy ran away from home and started
life with nothing, accomplished great
things in his lifetime.

Mary and Peter had such a sweet love story
and were excellent examples to admire.
I wonder if Benjamin ever knew or recognized this?

Benjamin received letters from his sister, Jane
Franklin, teasing him philandering reputation-
he didn't care for it. Jane wanted him to turn
away from an immoral life and become a true
Christian, but he preferred secular life.

I see your point.
Mine was to introduce Benjamim's grandmother
(Mary Morrill Folger) and her father,
*It was Benjamim's great grandfather.

Pamela | 2209 comments Here's my quiz question. It is in keeping with Presidential elections:

This influential New England author graduated from Harvard with Phi Beta Kappa honors. They wrote a campaign biography for a U.S. Presidential Candidate in the late 1800's. The candidate went on to win the Presidency. Name the author who wrote the future President's campaign biography. Extra Credit emojis if you can also name the President, but you win with just the correct N.E. author.

This is not an author you would think of right away. He wrote many books. Quite a few were set in New York City. However, he was quite well known and is still being read today. His books were very popular in the late 1800's. He himself was rather controversial. Personally, I'm not a fan, but thought it would be a good question because of the approaching Presidential Election.
