I thought of you while watching an old episode of Bonanza the other night, Allyson! The entire episode was about Mark Twain! It was quite good, and very accurate! I really enjoyed it!

Lily Rose Dorothea | 1454 comments I can't help thinking it might be someone that Louisa May Alcott knew. I remember Dan calling Demi "Deacon" in Little Men, and I wonder if this was a nod to someone she knew. So my guess is Thoreau.

Pamela | 2209 comments Dorothea Dix was an interesting person. I know a lot about her because of my interest in the American Civil War. She was the Superintendent of Army Nurses during the war. There is a lot of information about her at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, Maryland. A very interesting place! Here's a link I think you'll be interested in:

https://www.civilwarmed.org/dorothea-...

The entire website is quite interesting. I used to be a member of the museum when I was active in Civil War Reenacting. I portrayed a lady in the U.S. Sanitary Commission. They had a Sanitary Commission Fair in Philadelphia during the war. I compiled lots of information about it over the years, in hopes of someday writing a book about it. I should take another look at doing that, now that I'm sick and have so much time on my hands. I hadn't thought about it in years, until just now!

Emma | meadowroselibrary Oh, Meggy-Meg-Meg...I do believe that's everyone...and I'm getting quite anxious!!! 😡😡😡

message 10189: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments There is a book about Dorothea Dix called Angel of Mercy by Rachel Baker. That's most likely the one you are talking about. I've read several others over the years. Here's a list, if you are interested:

~One Glorious Ambition: The Compassionate Crusade of Dorothea Dix by Jane Kirkpatrick

~Dorothea Dix: Advocate for Mental Health Care by Meg Muckenhoupt

~Voice for the Mad: The Life of Dorothea Dix by David Gollaher

~Breaking the Chains: The Crusade of Dorothea Lynde Dix by Penelope Colman

You can't believe Thoreau was serious or you can't believe Dorry won? 🀣
