Isn't it amazing that Benjamin Franklin never had any of his inventions patented? He didn't want to make a profit from them. He preferred that all people benefited from them. Living close to Philadelphia my entire life, I have always greatly admired Franklin. The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia is an amazing place!

Pamela | 2209 comments You have the author correct, Dorothy. Now you need the invention for which he received a patent. Keep in mind that he received several patents, but the one I'm looking for is still being used today...much to my displeasure, I might add!😝

I declare Allyson the winner, as she was the first to correctly answer BOTH parts of my question!

Mark Twain invented a "Garment Fastener" aka an adjustable elastic strap. His intent was that it would be used by men instead of suspenders, which Twain disliked wearing. It was not well received by the public. However, during World War One, many women began to work in factories, producing products for the War. They found corsets to be entirely too cumbersome while performing their jobs. Twain's "Garment Fastener" was used in the creation of adjustable bra straps, across the ladies' backs. The modern bra was created and the rest is history! 😝😀😫 I have disliked the uncomfortable things my entire life!!! LOL!!!

So, that's the scoop on that! CONGRATULATIONS ALLYSON!!!!

Have you been to Philadelphia? There are so many historic sites there, many related to Benjamin Franklin. The historic district is only a 50 minute drive from my home. Whenever I stand in front of Independence Hall, I am moved to tears to think of the meaning of that relatively small area. It's very emotional to walk in the footsteps of our Founding Fathers. Even though I tease about being a Tory, I do love the history of our nation and what it stands for. I'm just very disheartened by what is becoming of our wonderful country. Another place that makes me feel very emotional is the Gettysburg battlefield. I find myself getting choked up when I go there, too. It takes about 2 1/2 hours to drive there from my house.

I've never been to either of those places but can relate to the emotions when you know you are walking the same ground that the Founding Fathers or other heroes have walked. Last year my dad and I visited Braddock's grave and saw the old Braddock road. It was awe-inspiring to think that some of those very trees might have been there at the time! I've also been to Monticello...twice actually. Jefferson has been one of my heroes ever since I was little. ❀️

message 8333: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments I admire Thomas Jefferson, too. Monticello is a beautiful place, as well as the University of Virginia campus, which he also designed. It amazes me to see such beautiful architecture from the days long before power tools! I love old homes and buildings! I am very interested in The French and Indian War and have visited many of the sites related to the war. Fort Pitt is interesting. Many people, myself included, believe that The French and Indian War was truly the First World War. It has infuriated me to see the recent destruction and vandalism happening to so many of our sacred historic sites! Today's lack of respect is appalling! It makes me so sad. Do you know, there are those who even want to see The White House, U.S. Capitol, Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument torn down! We really do live in a world turned upside down and it makes me heartsick!πŸ˜₯

This sounds vaguely familiar to me! There was an instrument that had such a weirdly sweet sound it caused madness...is this the one?

message 8347: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 2209 comments I think I know. If it is who and what I am thinking of, I have played the instrument, too. Even though this author most notably lived in my area, he was born in Boston. I'm not positive if this is correct, but I'm going to say Benjamin Franklin and the Glass Armonica (or Harmonica...it is known by both names).
